What is the difference between IRRV and PR?
When you get your PR you are actually given a Returning Residence Visa (RRV) which lasts for 2 years.
If you continue to meet requirements at the end of the 2 years, you can then get an IRRV (indefinite).
So, the difference is that an RRV normally lasts 2 years whilst an IRRV doesn't expire.

Ian, Am I required to get anything else apart from a visitors visa (already got PR since Feb 08) when visiting Oz?

Hi Lesley (I know I'm not Ian but thought I might be able to help!),
You'll be entering Australia on a British passport so you have to satisfy the criteria applicable to British citizens...the fact you're travelling from New Zealand doesn't matter.
So you just need a visitors visa, which can be got on-line...
http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/tourist/evisitor/
I just checked the site and discovered the rules have changed (since oct 2008) and you have to apply for an "evisitor" (you used to have to get an ETA). Have just quickly scanned the page and can't really see what the difference in them is apart from the fact that you pay AUD20 for an ETA but there's no fees at all for the evisitor. :nice1 Anyway all the info is on that site.
Then you just need to remember to have a valid visa to get back into NZ! As you got your PR in Feb 08 you should have a valid 2 year RRV.
HTH :)

Unless we did it wrong we had to pay for our visas online, $20 each

You didn't do it wrong, you just did it before October 2008 when the visa changed to an eVisitor visa instead.
