Bring or buy?

We're about out of time to ship very much, so we're thinking of sending a few things by air (the bits and pieces we can't be without) and buying most things when we arrive.

Looking at prices of cheap-ish furniture it seems to work out a bit cheaper to buy than to ship lots of furniture, especially when we'll have to rent out house out for some time (nothing's selling here)

I'm sure this will have been asked before, but any thoughts?

Thanks in advance for your help :)

People's opinions vary on this point. Here http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=23204 is a thread which will give you an idea of the range of ideas. I think this is a very personal matter, because we all vary in how attached we are to things, what stage of life we're at (which will affect how many things we've got to be sentimental about if we're that way inclined, perhaps), what quality of furniture and stuff we've got and what we're willing to put up with when we arrive... etc., etc..

But you can get reasonably cheap furniture. When you know what you need and where you are, you can get some advice on good places to shop. (And then there's TradeMe, of course.)

I worked out he cost of items we would bring versus cost of shipping. By the time I worked out cost of appliances, beds, cupboards and the like it pays for the shipping container. Plus you get all your personal items brought over too and fill the cupboards with stuff.

really depends on standards, we've a flat full of second-hand stuff, and it would cost us less to replace with similar second hand stuff than to ship it, especially when you bear in mind that some of it you could sell for a profit, plus it gives us the option of getting things gradually as and when we can afford them rather than one lump sum to pay out.
Also when you think that you have to do without those things for a few months, it really makes you question wether you NEED it when you have to decide wether you will miss it for a few months!
