My work to residence visa came through yesterday afternoon! I'm really pleased and the process was quite quick. My application was dropped off at the VIA centre in Makati on Weds last week (14th Jan). I had a query for more documents on Tuesday (20th) and faxed them through on Weds (21st). My HR contact for my future employer emailed me to tell me that the immigration officer had phoned and asked some questions. Apparently satisfied, she said she would process the application and it arrived on Fri 23rd Jan.
I have to stay in the Phils for a little longer to make sure my daughter's British passport comes through but will be flying to NZ in the next couple of weeks, ideally sooner.
Phew! Once I begin work, I can apply for PR for my family and myself and go through an application all over again!
btw - wanted to say thanks for all the comments and advice written here. If I need to know something, I always search first and have found this website to be a treasure trove of information.
