Just trying to prepare for what seems like the most time-consuming aspect of the process. As I understand it, we have to provide police certificates from every country where we've lived for a year or more. For me, this includes the USA and New Zealand (I currently live in the UK but I won't have been here a year, so I assume I don’t need one from here). For OH, this is Britain, France, and New Zealand. I was told that the NZ checks would be done automatically without having to really set anything up, so I'm assuming that the ones we will have to arrange ourselves will be the American, UK and French ones. Does that sound right?

For sure the USA. Not sure about the other countries, I would assume so. :)
If you need help with the FBI one for the USA, I can help you with that! :nice1

Is it just the countries in the last 12 years where you have lived? Or countriies where you have EVER lived?
(wife is South African and I have spent time over there myself - but not in the last 14.5 years)

OH had to provide one for any country he'd lived in for the last TEN years...luckily this only meant Canada and we had it within a week.
I as his sponsor only had to provide one for every country I'd lived in for the last SEVEN years...again, thankfully only Canada. Though the country I lived in for three years before that was NZ and they would obtain that.

As far as I remember, you need one from every country you have lived in for more than one year (ever in your life) and every country you have nationality of, regardless of how long you might have lived there.

From the INZ website:
* All applicants aged 17 years or over must provide police certificates at the time a residence application is lodged unless there is a different instruction in the country-specific information (see below).
* If you have lived for periods of 12 months or more in any other countries during the last ten years, you must also provide police certificates from these countries, and also your country (or countries) of citizenship unless you can provide satisfactory evidence that you have never lived there.
