Just thought I would pop this link in again for those wanting to know what is 'on the box' re New Zealand.
http://www.onthebox.com/partner/otb/detail.asp?id=3141554
There may be many others like us who don't have Sky etc., so it is important to us not to miss anything.
'House Auction' on Tues 5th on C4 4pm might be interesting, as someone is auctioning their house in order to go to NZ. :?

Well, I missed the holiday programme, but A place in the sun was o.k.
Lovely place, but OMG it is a bit pricey for what I'll be looking at.
Still I hopefully will not be going to Auckland, although I would love to visit - obviously :nice1
Can't escape the feeling that the daughter in the programme was putting a bit of pressure on mum. Seems she wanted to move there herself, but on her own terms, not on her mothers.... maybe I reading it wrong but if it was that it backfired on her coz the mother backed out!!

Well. No mention of damp/heating (lack of)/ possible long commute to cbd.
Apart from that, ok I suppose. Shame the lady decided against it in the end though.
I wonder how many if you will now start looking at Titirangi?

It looked to me like it was more the case of being talked out of it by her daughter mate. What a shame.

I'm with you StevieD, thought the daughter was almost having the last word on what was going to happen. Funny how they never once mentioned renting!
I quite liked the house in the "bush" I could've seriuosly lived there-who needs a bath anyway?! Well apart from my missus :laugh
Got to admit I found it abit claustrophobic when right at the beginning the narrator said "Her daughter lives upstairs" :? .
Sod that for a game of soldiers, couldn't handle living that close to any of my family. Luckily for me my mum lives in Vancouver :nice1

Helped confirm for us, that Howick is somewhere worth serious consideration.
She looked good for 50

Did Amanda Lamb really say Auckland is a cheap place to live in?
At the beginning of the programme they said if mum liked it daughter would then follow on, so why say at the end that she couldn't go through with it as she didn't want to be separated from her?
She looked great for 50 but in every scene she seemed to be posing. The point where she was sitting on the kitchen units really wound us up - she certainly seemed conscious of the camera crew! Do you think she was genuinely considering going, or did she want a free holiday with lots of publicity.
Sorry just being sceptical and jealous that I don't look that good at 43 :laugh

Forgot to say that BBC's Holiday Programme made me want to go NOW. It made NZ look absolutely brilliant, especially Wanaka.

Yes, and I'm sure it is compared to London

Yeah Auckland is cheaper than Knightsbridge and chelsea, funny how the sun is always shinning, true it is called a place in the sun, but it serves no real purpose in presenting a true picture of NZ. I could see from as soon as the show started that there would be issues with family proximety. It made me laugh how she said oh I am braving it, leap of faith etc yet she wouldn't sell her uk property, I am just glad I am going to be a simple south Islander.

that show was riddled with issues! maybe like someone suggested it was staged as it seemed v insincere. a high-level head-hunter who cannot make a decision for herself. worrying! as said, researchers could have done a little more prep - clearly didn't master subject.
we both watched it and felt even more strongly it is the right move for us. brought back a lot of happy memories of a great place. hub champing at bit. we decided last week that i will go out a month early to sort things as everything moving too slowly with nzis and teenager finding it hard. she will stay back with pop to to do some early gcse's and then they will join us mid-june. v cool. what a great place. cannot wait. bring on the damp houses!

Totally agree. And as someone else mentioned earlier, what about renting? I kept on saying to Debbie, 'What doesn't she rent?' Perhaps renting isn't part of the remit for that programme. I realise these programmes have to be 'staged' to a certain degree, but the whole thing came across as a bit false. Still, it was nice to see some Auckland locations.

have often wondered why there is so little media attention on auckland. ak marketing people need a good talking-to. so does that daughter. sheesh

These prog are VERY VERY staged.
My sis was on the one where a chef will come to your house and prepare a meal out of the ingredients out of you fridge. (kitchen I*******)
From prompting her on questions to ask, to her hubby coming in through the door from work clean ( he is a builder!).
She hates all them kind of shows now cos she knows how much of it is falsified.
Chef stank of stale ale from the night before too. They arrived at 1.00pm!!!

These prog are VERY VERY staged
They did an episode of How Clean is your House in Ramsgate last year. My husband was still teaching at the time and the house in question was lived in by one of his pupils. Apparently they were instructed not to clean their house at all for 6 weeks!

Didn't see the Auckland prog last night (we were out on the first of our 'goodbye' visits to a friends house) - but my bro in law has taped it for us so will be interesting to see it.
I often wonder how 'real' these progs are.

Enough said about the woman & daughter - agree with all above.
What we really enjoyed though was seeing some of Auckland's suburb areas. We were quite impressed. Whereas it's not our 1st choice by any means (still hoping for Christchuch), it is ofcourse one if not 'the' main location for IT Project Management so it may end up being a destination we need to consider.
Lovely to see the spectacular scenery supposedly 20min away from the city centre. Thought the 2nd house was wonderful, so what if the kitchen / bathroom wasn't overly modern - have they never watched any housedoctor / DIY programs? Surely you need to see the potential of properties?
Anyway, made me think lots of Linda & Ali and had a lovely chat this morning (sorry for waking you up Linda - but it was lovely to hear your voice :nice1 Hope Ali caught the next ferry :cheers )
Staged shows - a shame, but does provide some 'easy viewing' occasionaly.

Timbo - we'd already decided that Titirangi is the place for us and if a house like the last one was for sale we'd snap it up :yes As for damp etc. well we've heard enough of dehumidifers, heat pumps etc to know how to deal with that. And a bus leaves Titirangi village at 7.05am every morning and gets to CBD at 7.40/50. Hehehe - I've done my research. If I'm home by 6pm in the evening that's almost TWO HOURS earlier than I am at the moment so as far as I'm concerned there's nothing wrong with that. :clap

For anyone looking at Titrangi, the following is a message I received from a friend living there;
Auckland is made up of satilite cities as most cities are. I have a factory in Henderson which is 10 minutes away but my day starts at 8am when I leave hoe and go the New Lynn to measure and quote then to work after that. I have 2 other key holders for the factory that start things off for me. The latest I finish is 4.30pm... Ive finished with all the long days now. When the glaziers start work, we normally try to do some local work as this brings the time up to 9 or 03 then the trip to or through town (Auck city) is a lot better but if I was to work in town I WOULD use the trains as that is by far the quickest way to travel. By car the trip would take probably an hour. If you look at Aucklands shape, we have a problem with very little cross town routes because of the harbours that intersect the city... its part of what makes me love the place
Hope it is usefull to someone.

We've rented in Titirangi ... and were eaten alive. :eek Even so, it is a nice area. I thought that 'bush house' was in the Waitaks though.

i'll ask chris!
thought it would be a bit harsh - i grew up in an old forest with a creek/ ravine/ waterfall out back and large pond nearby. the large deck overhang at back was only useable in summer thanks to the constant zipping of tiny insects by a high-tech bug light that was beside the table. and this was central canada, not sub tropical nnz.
that said, thought they had invented auditory bugger-off things where you sit them on your table and they let off a low level hum that warns off mos's? sydneysiders say they work...
