new phone (landline) and broadband provider?

I am currently with Telstraclear phone rental and cable broadband. Very happy with service provided and cost is approx $85 p/m for 5gb bb.

The area where I am moving does not have Telstraclear cable and when I went into their shop, I was brushed off with 'here's customer services phone number, call them, we don't know what your options are for moving'.

I then went into the Telecom shop and was very pleased with the level of service and information I received.

My question is: If I cancel the Telstraclear package (12months to coincide with my 12 months rental period), and I open a new account with Telecom (who have ADSL2+ in the new area) one week earlier than the date I cancel with Telstraclear, would it still be possible to port my number over or would I have to have a completely new number.

I think I am answering my own questions as I type this, but interesting to hear if anybody else has done something similar ie change providers but keep their old number.
