The other day we had a shipping company visit to quote for our move. He mentioned about it being advisable not to try to ship feathers. This was in particular reference to the large amounts of lilac feathers and fur in our 12 years olds room.

I didn't think of it at the time, but it suddenly struck me about my fly fishing tackle. Most of the flies are made of feathers or animal fur. Following the rules to the letter this would mean they can't go with us :wah

Has anybody had any experience of taking fly fishing tackle into NZ?

I`ve not had personal experience, but seem to remember reading that they are ok if disinfected. Not to sure the NZ trout will like the taste of dettoll.
I will seek the opinion of a professional in the fly/lure trade in NZ.

I think they zap a lot of stuff like that in a microwave affair. best to pack them in a separate box at the front of the container for easy access. Doesn't hurt to email MAF and ask their advice to be sure.

Andy, this does not answer your question, but I thought it quite amusing.
The following is part of a reply I just received from my fly tying friend in NZ.

Years ago, Bernard Cribbins sent me some squirrel tails. He shot them out of his ol' oak tree, wrapped the tails in newspaper & posted them. Nobody even opened the parcel!

Cheers,Bill

Bill does not import himself, but reckons fumigation is the answer with anything feather based,

This sort of carry on isn't going to win any friends in New Zealand. :no

Wouldn`t you be better off having flies that the NZ trout like rather than flies that English trout like?

Thanks for the link, it looks like quite a few patterns are more or less universal.

My flies made it ok.

If you are shipping your stuff in a container then from our experience MAF are only interested in looking at things that are specifically identifiable from the itemised shipping list i.e. bikes, tents Xmas decs etc. If you put your flies in to an unassuming box and the packers just put that in to one of the many packing cases then no one will be any the wiser.

Can I ask about other tackle that MAF might pick-up on, e.g. waders, fly lines, landing nets.

I don't mind the loss of a few flies but presumably other tackle is dealt with by other means?

Andy,

I'd be very interested in what you find out on this aswell. I intend taking my gear over. I'm a course angler but could be converted to casting the old fly every now and then. :nice1

Judging by our experience if MAF are happy you have cleaned everything properly they don't look too hard. We spent a couple of weekends scrubbing everything, bikes, mowers, garden tools etc.

Once they realised that we had done a good job they stopped looking too closely. I don't think my rod case was even opened. They certainly didn't look at any of the other fishing stuff but that was probably because it wasn't specifically identified on the shipping list.

I think people worry a lot more than they need too.
