Hi Guys,
Sorry to post twice in a row.. but I have a friend over here on a work permit who works in a job identified on the skills shortage list (for 3 years), but does not have the relevant qualification. Can they claim points for this?
Thank you!

Hi
Unfortunately I don't think so. To get BONUS points for work experience in a skill on the list - I think you have to have the correct qualification to back it up.
Can they do a qualification?

AFAIK, JK&A is right! We are claiming bonus points and have had to have our qualifications assessed in order to claim those points.
If anyone has had any different experiences I am sure they will post.

They can claim points for the work experience (and points for exp in NZ if that is where it was gained), and points for any qualification they may have, but no bonus points if they don't have the qualification and experience in the same area (ie IT qual with IT exp).

Hello Everyone,
I am new to this forum and I am also very confused about the claiming of points under the LTSSL. Based on what I have read, you can only claim for points if you have a related qualifications, a degree or a diploma that is. But I found an interesting note on the ANZSCO site that says:
"At least three years of relevant experience and/or relevant vendor certification may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. In some instances relevant experience may be required in addition to the formal qualification. "
This is for ICT field (Technical Support). I am an Electrical Engineer and hoping to claim points for my ICT experience. Any ideas are welcome..

You are able to claim points for work experience and/or qualifications. You are only able to claim bonus points (an extra 50 points) if your LTSSL qualification and experience are related.
That is you could claim points for a degree in something unrelated, just as a degree, and you can claim points for any work experience, but not the extra points for having those two go together.
I'd try out the point calculator on the NZIS site.

Hello BkyMonster,
Thanks for the reply.
I am actually on the process of completing my EOI. The question below is what confused me most.
F12. Do you have a qualification in one of the areas of absolute skills shortage?
I am working in ICT field but I am an Electrical Engineer. My school is listed on the Recognised institution. Do you think I should say yes to this question?
I am afraid to get and be thrown back into the pool...

If your electrical engineering qualification is on the LTSSL then yes put it down. My OH had years of experience in telecom (on LTSSL) but no qualification, and a qualification in computer science (but not much experience). We claimed points for both, but not the bonus points, and had no issues.
Likewise, I think there are people on here who have a qualification in something unrelated and not on the LTSSL, but have years of experience in IT and were able to claim the points for the qualification and points for the experience but not the points for having the experience and qualification in the same field on the LTSSL.
I hope that helps.
