Did anyone have a stopover on their way to NZ, and tour around NZ for a few months before settling down back into "normal" life?
We are going to do exactly that, but am wondering at what point your UK travel insurance covers you for?
If you are emigrating, does it stop the minute you land on NZ soil? Because we will be holidaying for a while, and having a lot of our possessions on us, I want to make sure we are covered.
My credit card I bought the tickets with supposedly cover travel insurance, as does our current account. I called their respective helplines, but they could not answer this, they are apparently getting back to me. I guess I'll have to invest in specific insurance????

We are having a week in the Cook Islands on our way to NZ and have taken out travel insurance with trail finders, who we booked the flights with.
I too have a question waiting to be answered by them.
Normally although travel insurance does cover you for lost / damaged luggage it is based on the weight of the luggage not the replacement cost (warsaw convention). This is find for a normal holiday becuase for any items lost you can claim back from your noraml house hold contents insurance. Well we won't have house hold contents insurance.
Our house hold contents will be in a container, (with its own insurance) and by the time that arrives we will have already been in NZ for 3 weeks.
So what happens if our luggage that we are travelling with gets lost / stolen? There is no way we will be able to get anywhere near the value of whats in the bags (espically the mountain bikes in the bike bags) via the travel insurance. So we are waiting to find out what additional insurance is available.

As a slight aside, got a promo in from Egg, they are offering annual worldwide travel insurance for the whole family for £50. Limited I believe to Egg credit card holders, not sure though.
Sounds an absolute bargain (offer expires 31 March).

Hi Miffy,
Sorry to side track for a moment. I notice that your stopping off at the Cooks on the way to NZ. We're having 5 nights in the Cooks on our way back from NZ in Dec.
Whereabouts are you staying? We've got 2 nights at the Pacific on Rarotonga, then 3 nights at the Pacific on Aitutaki.

On the subject of the Egg insurance, I called them to confirm they would cover us (I've got an Egg card) and was told the insurance was only valid if your journey begins and ends in the UK. So for a one way trip we wouldn't be covered. :no
I've taken out seperate insurance for our flight that will also cover us for the first couple of weeks in NZ.

Mike,
We've got year round multi-trip insurance with Insure&Go (website has similar name), believe it was around £80 for our family of 4.
Very friendly and helpful on the phone too, would recommend you gave them a call if you're not sorted already.
In the past we used trailfinders insurance (now just use them for the flights etc), also Sainsbury's - but Insure&Go beat both prices by a mile :nice1
