NZIS's Pacific Office is to be closed after a damning report on a government department gone bad...
The Pacific wing of the Immigration Service has been abolished after a damning report revealed a badly run and out of control department.
The report says the legacy of the division, set up by former Immigration boss Maryanne Thompson, is a huge backlog of cases and a "queue of shame" in one Pacific country.
The Pacific Division of the Immigration Department decides the fate of thousands of Pacific Islanders wanting to move to New Zealand.
But the fate of the division has been sealed by the damning report.
"It paints a damning picture of a poorly performing service that was poorly lead and lacked a clear strategic mandate under the previous government," says Johnathan Coleman, Immigration Minister.
The report shows a raft of flaws including:
- Poor management
- Over-spending on travel, food and alcohol
- Too much being spent on overtime
- An "us and them" mentality with the rest of Immigration
- The perception that staff in the Pacific Division were treated differently, some even seen as "untouchable"
- Poorly trained staff

I wonder what this means for emmigrants with applications-in-progress within that division?
