I thought the powers that be simply used the electoral register, and then added in a given figure to allow for those under age. Probably something along the lines of 2.4 kids for every two registered voters.
As Diny says, people are coming and going all the time, so it must be damn neat impossible to be acurate.
Last I heard, from our mate Tony, the govt have not got a clue how many illegals are in the country, so how can they put a figure on the population.
After all, illegal or not, they still live here.

Don't they gather the info by that census we all had to fill out, how many immigtrants families live in your lounge etc I also recall that a very high percentage of UK people follow the religon of Jedi.
I must have met 60 million Poles and ukrainains on all the building sites i ve been on.
Intresting to see that NZ is 20,000sqKm bigger than the Uk. I also believe that the south Island only has a population of 900,000 which would take the poulation density down further. (SI anyway)

Dan. I think you are probably right about the census. But when was the last one carried out? I dont recall seeing one for years, and yet they are publishing figures for 2004.

Yep they only do it so often - too much work otherwise. Reckon that its not so accurate as there is always a 'fluid' population too.
Can you imagine that illegal immigrants are going to fill it in though if its an offence not to - its an offence to illegally come to the UK but they've done that?! :laugh
May the force be with you! ;)
