We've actually spent a bit of time in Henderson, so I might be able to help a bit.
We had friends who lived on Poinsettia off of Lincoln. We found it easy to walk around and shop or go to pubs. People seemed friendly and down to earth.
There are a lot of working class people in that area, laborers, construction, etc. They are teasingly referred to as "Westies" and can be distinguished by their workboots, short cutoff jean shorts, and flannels. :D
We didn't spend much time in the City Centre but it was as most NZ C.C.s, cafes, bookstores, boutiques, etc. There is a Westfield Mall not too far, might actually be in the next town but they run right together so it was hard to tell. Alcohol is not sold at the grocery store but there is a King Dicks and a wine shop right near our friend's place. Also in that area within blocks of each other are Pac "n" Sav, Burger King, McDonald's, Warehouse, and the loveliest little pet shop with a turtle pond out back.
Our friends have since moved South to Marton, but if you have specific questions I can ask them of I might even know some answers. Also have friends who lived in Massey and I can ask them about the area if you'd like.
We noticed other people were a bit disparaging about the area but we saw charm and our friends were certainly happy there.:nice1
