Hey everyone,
I've posted before, but just to update everyone my name is Ben and my wife and I currently live in the US and are planning to migrate to New Zealand. We are planning a trip probably later in the year (its a expensive trip) and I wanted to make the best out of it, and try and land a job. I want to be prepared before I go, but I dont really know how to, or what to do. Do I go through recruiters or employers, I really don't know how it works. Secondly does anyone have any cost saving tips on airfare or where to stay or anything it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again

I know from your other thread that you have a degree in business management. Can you tell us what kind of business you've been working in? That may help people give you some advice.
Also, from the research you have done, do you have any idea of what area(s) of the country you'd be most interested in seeing on your trip?

Hi there.
Some tips I'd have for anyone looking for a job.
Spend the money and get a local NZ number via skype that employers can call you on (have it redirect to a cell or home phone, take into account time difference as to what phone you want calls coming in on.)
Get a skype account for video conferences (free) and put it on your CV
Put the dates you will be available for interview on your CV
For travel, domestic flights are fairly cheap but they can add up if you are flying back and forth. Mid week flights are cheapest in my experience.
Hostels and/or backpacker hostels are good quality I hear, and there are also camper parks as well. Check out wotif.com, ratestogo.com and I also used travelbug.co.nz
Air NZ has ok sales in fall and spring for travel from the US.
Rent your cars from Omega if you can :nice1
Recruiters and employers will both respond better to you if you have solid dates you will be on the ground.
Hope that helps :)
What do you do?

Ok I have a degree in Business Management and have been working for Coca Cola Enterprises as an Account Manager for the past year.
And as far as locations I really have been looking around and I would love to live in Wellington, but am flexible.

Air NZ is having a sale good for several months at $798RT (plus taxes), nearly as cheap as it gets.

The more I look at it, the more I think that while I would love Wellington, Auckland is probably a better place to start, because it will probably offer more job opportunities than Wellington. So does anyone have any suggestions or stories of how you landed a job? Thanks again.

read my journal thread for a recent tale of enthusiam over economy. much of my approach was consistent with the previous advice given on this thread. feel free to pm if you want to know any specifics.

This isn't necessarily the case. I've had a far better response from recruitment agents in Welly and Chch than in Auckland. Most of the Auckland agents seem to treat you like just another number, whereas the Welly and Chch agents seem genuinely interested in you. I also get the feeling that although Auckland has more jobs, it has even more people looking for those jobs.
Whatever you do decide, good luck.

I feel a little dense for asking, but how would one find your journal thread about the economy? Thanks!

Look in the lounge for the "our recce journal" thread, its not about the economy, its about enthusiasm, very engaging reading..

In my search for a job I searched around to see if there was a city where Business Management was needed.. the only thing I really found was in hawks bay, but I know its not exactly one of the big cities, and the wife and I really feel it would be easier to assimilate in a city. Is there anyone who has found a job in Business Management that can enlighten me, or anyone really!!! Or are all the cities pretty much the same?

there's a large public sector in wellington and your skills should be transferable... also its fairly recession proof :)
