Wife as an International Student

Hi All,

I am sorry, I have been searching through all the threads have been blinded by the text :wah

My wife is looking at going to Wellington Uni as an International undergrad for midwifery with the long term aim of staying in NZ as a midwife.

The question I have is I believe that I can go as her spouse but while I am there can I then get a job and apply for a work permit or better still apply for PR under the skilled migrant category?

If so, can I just turn up under the wife's student visa and then start looking locally for a position?

Thanks

Ian

I believe you will be able to come along and have a work permit.
Dilanium on the forum is an international vet student and brought her husband with her. Maybe give her a pm and find out the details?

I am pretty sure that you will be able to come along on a visitor's visa good for the duration of her programme, and look for a job while you are on that visa then apply for a work visa.

I've been told that the BVSc is the only undergrad program where the spouses automatically get Work Permits as it is all that is required on the LTSSL (ie they are not requiring any work experience).

I would email the London branch of NZ immigration and ask them, but I would expect that you would only be able to get a visitors visa.

It is not hard to get the visa changed once you find a job though (I have friends in other programs who's OHs found jobs and got work permits).

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice Liz and Becky,

Looks a lot more positive now ;o) especially when midwifery is on the LTSSL. I'll double check with the London branch just to avoid getting too relaxed in moving ;o)

Cheers

you may be in luck. All it says on the LTSSL that is needed is a bachellor of Midwifery.

Ask the London Branch- they would know for sure.
