Likely to have been asked before, but can't find the answer.

We're in desperate need of some new phones & answermachine. Question is, do we go for the cheaper models to just last us whilst we're still here. Or is it worth buying some better quality ones - which would obviously only make sense if they'd work in NZ too.

So here's the question - do UK phones work in NZ? Is it simply a case of new plugs etc?

Any advice would be most welcome.

I am fairly certain they do, but have a niggly feeling that there may be one or two aspects that are different. come on somebody out there who is technical, elucidate us.

Yep they use BT connection - UK phones do work here & I wish I'd bought some with us... If they are electric (the one we have at the moment isn't its a cheapie from the Warehouse) then yes you just change the plugs.

Yes

For the avoidance of doubt - Others may have said just change the plugs. Unplug your UK phone, ship it here, plug straight into the phone socket and make some phone calls back to your pals in the UK to let the know what they are missing.

If your UK phone needs to be connected to mains electrickery you (cordless or comined ans machine) you will need to change the mains elec plug to fit NZ sockets.

AFAIK Caller ID hasn't yet been implemented here - you can't see who's calling you. Thats about the only difference to the UK

Not having bought landline hardware in the UK for so long I could not comment if it is cheaper here or not. We bought a pair of cordless landline fones for $85 from the warehouse (where everybody gets a bargain)

Thanks for all the replies, guess we'll go for a middle of the range price option and hope all will work both ways when we get to NZ.

Carol - your avatar just winked at me :eek Sure it didn't used to do this?

From what we have read most of the digital phone will work, however it is recommend that you use phones recommended by NZ telecom.
