Greetings! I just wanted to get some clarification on NZ employers. If I apply for a job once I get to New Zealand, will they immediately ask if I have a work permit? Will I get shut down by employers consistently if I don't have a permit YET (because I need a job offer to get a permit)? What is a professional, diplomatic way of addressing their concerns with me (and likely others on the forum) not having a permit?

On a side note: I have read on the forum that permits are quite fast to get if you show up prepared with all paperwork ready to go and wait all day in the immigration office. How can I explain to an interviewer/recruiter etc. that it's not as complicated and difficult to get and to not reject my application on this basis? Is there a way to tell them that technically, I can get a work permit as soon as I bring in my letter of employment to the immigration office?

Hi Globetreker
I received my work permit valid for 2.5 years in a week which also meant I could buy one way travel

Globetrekker, I would love to know which immigration office is handing our permits same day if you have all your paperwork together. I handed mine in two weeks ago and phoned yesterday and was told that all permits are taking 60 days min to process... if you find a quicker way - please let me know!

As for the other, I know a few people who have come over and made it very clear that they have no permit and employers seem often to be quite happy with waiting for people to get permits off an employment letter.
Just be straight up with them from the get go and tell them exactly where you are coming from.

See this thread: http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=23671&highlight=%22work+permit%22

People have been getting their permits fairly quickly with a job offer in hand.
