Customs charges and gifts?

We are considering buying something from the US, but aren't wanting to pay customs charges on it (They would apply as it is over the NZD threshold).

Could we avoid customs charges by having the item shipped to a family members house and then shipped to us as a gift or would that not work and we'd have to pay on it anyhow?

Unfortunately you'll have to pay duty on it anyway - and may have trouble proving the cost so it could be more in duty than if you buy directly.

If you have a friend coming over soon who can bring it with them then that may be your best option to avoid duties.

We decided to avoid that route as shipping was likely to be too much anyhow, but good to know, thanks!

Out of interest, I thought if it's a gift then it will always be free of duty, obviousley wrong so when does a gift become duty payable? Good to know in case someone buys me something expensive :D

Basically you get a $110 allowance - if it is more than this then you pay duty on the difference.

Not quite correct, whilst customs charges should be payable on gifts over $110 if the total amount due is less than $50 then they waive the charges.

No revenue collection will be made if the total amount owing on the goods imported is less than $50. This revenue waiver does not apply to alcohol and tobacco products.

If it's an item being sent to NZ from say a business where the custom declaration slip is ticked Sample or Merchandise. Then the value allowed in NZ before any taxes is applied is based on the $50 collectable GST threshold. That is NO GST will be collection if the total GST payable is LESS THAN $50. This is based on the current going exchange rate at time of entry into NZ. So for an item from the US, if the value is $50 + $30 USD shipping = $80USD. The person in NZ will pay no taxes upon arrival of the item. $80 / .56 = $143NZD. Then * 12.5% GST = $17.85. This is lower than the $50 threshold so the item just simply arrives on the door step.
