What channels are free to air through a freeview box? can you get freeview via a dish or is it always through the TV ariel?

We haven't succumbed to freeview yet.

Terrestrial Tv (Via an aerial) is:
Prime
TV One
TV Two
TV Three
C4
Maori TV
The Voice (Asian channel)
Visitor TV
Canterbury TV

To be honest, 6 nights out of 7 there is something to watch. Just the adverts are a pain, as the breaks are frequent, and sometimes longer than the actual program, but you soon get used to it.

Freeview is available and the same as in the UK (except it's high-def here). Again, via aerial, and you just buy a top box. At present, I think there are about 8-10 digital channels but not sure.

You can also get sky, but I refuse as it's soo expensive.

HTH,

Lou

I think it's terrestial only (aerial) but I'm not certain. I don't think you can get Prime on Freeview because it belongs to Sky, again my facts may be wrong.

As mentioned above, ad breaks are so long and frequent as to make off-air TV almost unwatchable. One of the best buys we ever made was one of those HDD DVD recorders that allow you to watch stuff while it is still recording. You set it going and then start watching 30 mins later or so. Then you can fast-forward through the ads and each hour's TV takes only 40 mins to watch!

So if you get Freeview in the UK through a receiver built into the TV, does that mean it will work in NZ, picking up Freeview channels through the aerial?

No, I don't think they have anything in common except the name.

You can get it through a dish. We had one when we moved in, and just hooked the box up to it. Worked fine. We now got sky, and we just change the plug in the back to watch one or the other (Prime is only on Sky, Kidzone is only on Freeview).

To be honest, I find it all pretty dire and when we just had Freeview, almost never watched anything at all. Slightly better with Sky as I like the History/Discovery channels.

are the leads that go into the back of the sky boxes the same as the UK ie: the ones from the dish?

Yes the connector from the dish/LNB is usually the same ( but is sometimes different depending on who installed it - you can use an adapter anyway) but you do know that the UK sky box isn't compatible with NZ version.

Should of course mention that not all the channels listed here are available everywhere (and you may not get reception even if the channels are available) and some regions get other channels.

And just in case the later post on the subject was missed, Freeview is available in NZ but it is NOT the same as in the UK.

If you are extremley luckly you can get cable but it does depend where you live this is a fraction of the cost of SKY ($49.95 ) pcm for basic I think cable was $5. out in Churton Park this is not an option not sure about Kapiti
Freeview boxes $300

Yes, most of Raumati to Waikanae (inc Param/Param Beach) gets Telstra (http://www.telstraclear.co.nz) cable.

We've just got the rabbit-ears at the minute, and the reception is still pants. Unless someone very tall comes and holds the aerial above their heads. :laugh

The rental we were in to start with had an aerial, and still only got 3 channels, 2 of which were snowy at the best of times and only really watchable if you squinted your eyes up a bit! Needless to say we didn't watch too much TV!

We will probably get freeview eventually, Sky is just too expensive for us right now I think.

It might be worth waiting for the TiVO launch instead of buying a freeview box BTW:

Oooooh yes, I saw this advertised last night. Could be good. I wonder how much their 'one off fee' will be though? Surely to make it worthwhile they have to beat the price of a freeview box/set-up?

well you can get the freeview box for 199 but you can't order pizza through it! I expect TiVO to be more expensive. should check what it sells for in Au for a comparison/expected price

ok just checked it's 700 oz dollars what's that in real currency?

Also just seen the TiVo ad. Personally I'd get both. Freeview is the very first toy I'm buying as soon as I get a job! How pitiful is that...

It's NZ$850 ish which seems quite steep:wah.....
It might just have to be freeview for now then :( The price is bound to come down after the initial launch, so maybe I'll do a re-think then.
