Skylight in bathroom

Does anyone else live in a place with a skylight that is open to the elements? I mean with significant gaps on all four sides--not so rain can get in, but definitely so that (a lot of) air can get in and out. I like this in summer, but how can this possibly be a good idea in the winter? Is there any downside to just sealing it up with some kind of insulating material? The bathroom does have a fan that ventilates to the roof as well, so the open skylight just seems like overkill.

Just sounds like the usual excellent building standards have been followed!

The house we're staying in is already getting chilly so I'm planning a couple of days under it, with a staple gun and some rolls of insulation to try and make sure that if we are still stuck here for winter, we don't freeze our behinds off. And if things do come together for us before winter, at least my MIL will be cozy!
