Hi guys really stuck on what visa to apply for, moving over in September with Husband and Son (age 5), i will be working as a midwife, husband will be a stay at home Dad and possibly work part time later on once Son settled. I have a job offer but cannot apply for midwifery registration in NZ just yet as i dont qualify here until July. I have a few points which i need some help with.
1. Was thinking of skilled migrant but employer wants me started by end of september so dont think the timescale for this visa would work.
2. If i apply for work visa is it correct that my husband will also have to apply for one and my son a study visa.
3. Work to residence visa, dont really understand this option, what are the benefits / disadvantages over work visa.
4. If we get work visas could we apply for residence as soon as we arrive.

hi libra81
if you have job offer in hand, I would advise you to consider skilled migrant category. Because once you receive skilled immigration, that’s it don’t worry about changing the category after you arrive in NZ. Under skilled migrant your husband will also able to work without any restrictions. And you can get benefits for your child as well. ( not in other category)
I believe London INZ office will provide you skilled migrant visa within one to three months if you have job offer.
Please note: the only process will make your way delayed is Police Verification certificate ( take up to 10 working days) and medical certificate (10 to 20 working days)

Thanks for your reply, i was thinking about the skilled migrant route but i think once i actually become registered here and then register with NZ midwifery board i wont have enough time to go down that route as employer wants me there by end of september. Unless i dont need registration to gain visa ?

You may find it helpful to look for all the posts by our member Papias, who is also entering NZ shortly as a midwife. I think she has probably covered most of the issues that you will need to be aware of.

Just to give you a little insight into the work to residence programme. If you have a job offer that is 2 years or more and your salary is $55 000k or more a year, and the company offering you the visa is an accredited company you are eligable for a work to residence visa. The visa is issued for 2 years after which you can apply for residency. This used to be a fast option, however with immigration at the moment, these visa's are taking about 6 weeks. To check out if the company is accredited, just go onto http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/worktoresidence/ and click Accredited Employers list on the right hand side of the page.
Your husband and son will have to put in seperate applications but will alternately fall under your visa.

If you have a job offer that is 2 years or more and your salary is $55 000k or more a year, and the company offering you the visa is an accredited company you are eligable for a work to residence visa. The visa is issued for 2 years after which you can apply for residency. This used to be a fast option, however with immigration at the moment, these visa's are taking about 6 weeks. To check out if the company is accredited, just go onto http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/worktoresidence/ and click Accredited Employers list on the right hand side of the page.
Your husband and son will have to put in seperate applications but will alternately fall under your visa.
A few minor clarifications to this post.
If your job is on LTSSL then your employer doesn't have to be accredited.
The WTR visa is normally issued for 30 months.
The OH will need to apply for a general work visa and children of school age will need to apply for student visas.

Some answers to your questions.
1. You may have enough time if you are organised (and lucky). You will likely find that your employer will be willing to wait if it takes a little longer as they know that this is a slow process due to NZIS, selling houses etc.
2. If you apply for a WTR or Work visa then yes, your OH will need to apply for a general work visa and your son a student visa. These can all be sent in at the same time as part of the same application.
3. If you have a WTR then it is meant to be simpler to get a PR after 2 years. Other than that, AFAIK there isn't much difference to a 2 year general work visa.
4. If you have enough points then you can apply for residence as soon as you want, you certainly don't have to wait.

Not exactly (anymore...).
I work for an accredited employer and they now have to provide proof that they can't find kiwis for the job advertised. It's not a given anymore.

I know where you are coming from but that isn't in relation to my comment surely.
To get a WTR and your job is on the LTSSL then your employer doesn't need to be accredited.
Or, are you saying that even if your job is on the LTSSL then your employer must now be accredited?

Just that accredited employers no longer necessarily have carte blanche. Some jobs they can offer to whom they want, others they have to prove they can't find locals for.

Hi guys thanks for the replies, i think our best bet so that we can get over as soon as we can is to apply for work visa's then apply for PR when we get over. Going to go back on website and re read the info i think a glass of wine (or 2) may be needed :cheers

Yes I think exactly the same! We don't have to wait 2 years to apply so just get there and make your decisions. Like you getting excited about it all. I have contacted pet people in Shropshire and had a very long conversation but very helpful about my cat and feel very happy with taking him now! Such care to the extent they stencil his name on his cage! Lots of conflicting info but we are sticking with visa initially.
