Telstraclear fibre optic in ChCh

Anyone have this in ChCh? Looks like they started rolling it out in Auckland, Wellington recently as well, though I think it's been in ChCh for longer? ..at least that's what the flyer they gave us said!
Our house happens to be wired for it but we are in a contract with Vodaphone until October.
(The plug is in the laundry room which is unfortunate placing as the phone line is in the lounge...)
Don't know what it is but for the past 2 weeks or so our internet has been really bad, slow and often down during the day. Could be Vodaphone in our area, could be our lines. So we've been thinking about what we'll do when the contract is up.
Would be interested in hearing from anyone that has/had this especially if you've had some other service as well.
Thanks!

vodafone has had a fault, the speed was crap today any where with 03 prefix and some parts of Sth Auckland too
but the girl on the phone said that we could ring the billing team for a refund if the fault persisted,

My son is very fed up with the download and upload speeds, but we are also tied in till May before we can try another service provider.... bet they are all crap!

That's interesting and explains some stuff.
I think in the US I learned to be afraid of the internet providers as they threaten you with extra fees when you call up to ask if your service is down. Asking for a refund if something's wrong with the service, amazing. :D

Hey guys, I've been following this thread with interest as I'll be needing to get an ISP for my move within Welly in May.

I've done a bit of investigation on some NZ forums and the upshot is that if you value performance and stability, then cable internet (via Telstra) is the only way to go. Particularly if you want to download/upload to destinations beyond NZ. Apparently Telstra has a connection pipe to Telstra Australasia which gives them better connection internationally. Hence why their uploads/downloads are demonstratably better than the ones provided over DSL internet (phone lines).

Also cable internet performance is more consistent than DSL, since your speed will not be limited by how far you are situated from the nearest telephone exchange.

In terms of cost, Telstra seems relatively mid-table, but if you want stable/quick performance, it's the only way to go (according to the forums).

Compared to the UK, every ISP is really expensive over here - I was paying £15 for 8mb speed and 40GB download per month (and that included the cost of the phone line!) with Sky BB/Talk.

Actually Wellington was rolled out quite a few years ago, it was the home of Saturn (originally the Kapiti coast TV company that got bought out by Telstra), and the only downside is that we have ugly overhead cables in the streets here. However it's an excellent system (phone/TV and internet all come down the same cable) and both upload and download speeds are fine, but like anything I suppose it's what you use the internet for really.

Cheers
Bob

I think BkyMonster might be referring to the 120G package with 25Mbps/2Mbps package which is only available in ChCh - at $230 a month, it's for net-heads only...

That price is ridiculous! Lol

Im worried about coming back to NZ re the internet.

Here in london I download often 60-100gb per month (linux distros;-) and have a 20mbps fibre optic connection with TV for £30 per month.

Haha, sorry didn't meant to scare you. They actually do I far more reasonable (relatively) package of 40GB for $110 and 80GB for $150, at speeds of up to 10Mb - which is very acceptable, even for the UK. Link for packages:

Either way, internet connection is definitely more expensive than in the UK, as they lack the infrastructure. But then again, I can see the sea from my kitchen window, drink decent coffee and actually have a life outside work here - wasn't like that when I was in London!

The only plan they offer for the same money as here is
LightSpeed 20G Up to 10 Mbps / 2 Mbps 20G $79.95

but here I get twice the down speed, no download caps and cable TV included....

All in all I wouldnt really care if alot of the stuff I do didnt revolve around IT and the internet!
