Just noticed this on good old NZIS

Policy changes for April - Amendment Circular 2005/04
Monday, April 04, 2005

Family Quota
The Family Quota policy has been amended to reflect that the Family Quota for 2005 has been set at nil for the coming year (effective 15 March 2005).

GENERAL INFORMATION
For the 2004/05 financial year, Government has allocated 45,000 (up to 50,000) places for people to be granted New Zealand residence under the immigration programme. The categories under the programme are as follows: made up of:
 Skilled/Business Stream (60 percent) – Skilled Migrant Category (SMC), closed General Skills Category, Work to Residence, Investor, Entrepreneur, and Employees of relocating businesses.
 Family Sponsored Stream (30 percent) – Partnership, Dependent Child, Parent, Sibling, Adult Child, Family Quota, Family-Sponsored Transitional Policy, closed Humanitarian category
 International Humanitarian Stream (10 percent) – Refugee Quota (750), Refugee Status, Refugee Family Quota (250), Samoan Quota (1,100), Pacific Access (650), Victims of Domestic Violence, Contingency/Ministerial Direction, International Humanitarian Transitional Policy.

If I'm right, I believe this adds upto something like 30% of the total allocated no. of migrants they intend/would like to bring into the country.

I wonder what their reasoning is behind this ammendment ? :?

No idea. I know nothing about this immi category. Might it have something to do with their high prioirity being
a.) skilled migrants and the time their processing takes
b.) related to that, the possibility that many family folks are "wild cards" in that the incoming family members in question might not be skilled or geared to get into work quickly.

I may be uetterly wrong - indeed, my second point might be plain insulting (not intended).

Cheers,
Matt.

The family quota, from what I can tell, is sort of like a lottery for family members that don't fit any other family catagory (eg partnership, dependant children, parents (I know with the parent catagory you have to have more children in NZ than the UK (for example) to be eligable)). So those of us applying for partnership etc don't need to panic. They seem to select a random number of people each year that they will take this way. (This is the only way my husband's parents could emigrate to NZ as he has a brother and sister still here in the UK). Obviously this year they have decided to take none!!
Well, that's my take on it anyways. Who knows with this whole emigration red tape parade??
