Does anybody know if our UK Nintendo Wii will work okay in NZ (probably not the most important of issues, but hopefully will keep the kids out of trouble occasionally). Thanks.

I don't know about the UK Wii but our U.S. Wii works -the only thing we need is a plug adaptor:clap

Yes, you just need to change the plug or get an adapter.

well the machine will probably work, but bear in mind that Wii games and machines are region encoded. so UK games will not work on NZ machines and vice versa.

see attached for compatible regions:

unless you're not planning to buy any new games (or will import them from Europe) then maybe an idea to sell your Wii and buy a new one in NZ...

think there are ways around the region encoding, but not investigated.

I was under the impression that Wii was not region encoded - which your posted thread seems to also confirm

Are you not using a transformer??? We've been using a transformer with our wii as we were told it didn't automatically convert between electrical systems, while our PS3 had no problem.

I just did a search on Google as I had a suspicion it was. I have no direct experience of this (I don't own a Wii), but it wouldn't surprise me if the games are region encoded, it's pretty common in the Console game industry (if not the PC game industry). The thread is one of many which confirms that there is region encoding.

According to the wii website wiis are region coded (http://www.nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/service/faq_for_parents_959_962.html):

Just like Nintendo GameCube and other television-bound consoles before it, Wii employs a Region Code based on the country where it is sold. Because of the Region Code, only software purchased in the same region will be compatible with your Wii console.

But I have no idea what the regions are...

Current regions are:-
U: USA
E: Europe
J: Japan
A: Australia

They may include China later (fifth region)

Yes, as long as you don't use RF-output then the UK Wii will work on a UK or NZ TV. The mains voltages are the same, so apart from changing the plug / using an adaptor it will work.

As has been mentioned by others, technically the Wii is region locked so any UK games will play on a UK Wii (even if it is in NZ), but games from another region may not.

However, games publishers don't always region encode their games, and if they do then they still tend to allow all the games for the same TV standard to work i.e. games for one PAL region will normally work on all PAL regions.

Worst case scenario you would need to order new games from the UK.

There are only 3 different "regions" for Wii games

PAL (UK, Europe and Aus/NZ)
NTSC-U (US and Canada)
NTSC-J (Japan)

Consoles and games will not play between different regions but all PAL games WILL DEFINITELY play on all PAL consoles

No transformer- only the adaptor and it works fine. OH just brought back a new game from his trip to U.S. and kids think its Christmas.:) We do use the transformer for our sonicare toothbrush though.

Innnteresting. We also have ours on a transformer as the Wii doesn't say it supports 240v on the case. 120v only and we didn't want to risk it.

The PS3 says it doesn't support 240V as well, however we opened it and looked at the actual hardware and found that it could.

Hrmmm... That's something to think on... (I have to have a transformer for our DS at the very least).

We brought our wii from uk and nz games play perfectly well, but sometimes i do get my mother send me games when i buy them on ebay as getting a few at a time is much cheaper!

hmmmm i'd been holding out on that particular purchase because i was sure that the region coding would be an issue, really regret not buying one at christmas when i saw it really cheap now:(

I was told when I bought our wii in Canada that it should work internationally without a transformer, so good to hear others are doing it! Is there not an issue with playing ntsc games on the wii on a pal (nz) tv? Or did those of you with north american games/consoles also bring a north american tv to play it on?

For those of you using US Wiis in NZ- Did you buy a new plug for it, or just buy an adaptor plug for the one you already have?

We bought a special "switching power adaptor" (by dreamGear) in the U.S. that converts to the 100-240v- but we don't use a transformer. Sorry for the confusion- hope this helps?

Ahh okay. We looked into getting a new one, but the transformer was less expensive for us.

Our UK Wii works fine, we just brought our 4-way plug adapter and changed the main plug to a NZ plug, so we didn't have to change all the TV, DVD player, Wii plugs etc. We have also bought games in NZ which work fine, it didn't even occur to me that they might be region encoded... games here are expensive though, might be worth looking at UK Amazon and getting them shipped over.

We rented some wii games from Blockbuster and tried them unsucessully in our wii. Now our wii doesn't work even though we have restarted it, etc. We are looking up the user manual online for troubleshooting but can't figure out how to fix it. Its seems conincidental that it doesn't work after trying the games that we rented. Does anyone know if this can ruin the wii?

Veeery interesting.... I have no idea if it is just coincidence or if that really can mess up the wii, but I am going to proceed in assuming the worse that putting a game from a different area into the wii will make it not work until I hear differently.

Our wii works fine with games bought in the UK and in NZ we have an adapter on a uk extention socket.

As an aside games for the wii over here are quite expensive compared to the uk. We recently priced one up for the kids and it was around $100 whilst being £14.99 on Amazon or £19.99 in Argos :exit

We called customer service and they said that using the NZ disk won't work- but it "shouldn't" break the unit. OH is travelling back to U.S. for business next week (which happens to be 20 minutes from their service center in WA) so he is taking it back with him. They said its still under warranty so they will fix it "while he waits" or replace it which is nice. (its about a year old). I still think its weird that it broke right after we tried the disk from blockbuster but guess it is a coincidence. Oh well- we are now Wii-less for a few weeks :uhoh
