Hey,

I am graduating in July with a degree in BA(Hons) Business and Management, i hope to fly out to new zealand in august/september time on a working holiday visa for a year.

The only experience i have so far is part-time store assistant type jobs as i have been unable to do full time jobs because of education.

So will i stand any chance whatsoever of getting any job anywhere in New Zealand at the moment with the current recession?

Do you mean jobs for your working holiday year, or a longer term one?

I know of two gap-year people from the UK who have NZ jobs right now, one doing strong-arm stuff, lifting and delivering in and from a warehouse, and the other mucking out animals on a huge farm on South Island. Quite honestly, I think it would be like any time, anywhere - if you show up, willing to work, and your face fits, you'll find something.

Sorry i should have been more clear, probably didn't help i wrote it at 3am :D

I meant longer term, with my degree a job offer out of auckland would give me the 140 points needed for an eoi to be accepted.

So in the current climate with no experience and only a degree what are the chances of a longer term job offer if im willing to do any job? (to get my foot in the door so to speak)

Why full PR with all the hassle, cost and time? Go out for a year, try and find work, if you find somewhere you like you can always pursue visa options from NZ.

That is what the OP said i.e. "i hope to fly out to new zealand in august/september time on a working holiday visa for a year."

I know. I'm reinforcing the point. Aren't these youngsters lucky that they have this option. Unlike an old git like me:)

There is really no good way to tell for sure until you try.

I guess sometimes you just have to jump and take the risk of failing, because if you do not there is zero chance of it happening.

Good Advice there.

I think ill go out in august/september anyway, if im there for a year then ill be there for the end of the recession as they believe it will end around march 2010, gives me 6 months while the country starts to grow again.

If i dont get a job the first time i can always go back after a year or so and try again :D

hey Alex UK im a recent grad from the USA (BA)Hospitality Management already living in NZ and currently jobs are slim to none for grads. You will find work but most likely work you are over qualified for. But then again you have to start somewhere and if NZ is the place then go for it :)

LOL @ overqualification. My current job (in the UK) pays less and has less responsibility than my first job out of uni 10 years ago. Goodness only knows what hubby will find once his redundancy is confirmed, because he's battling against everyone else in his department for the same very few jobs.

Recession = compromise for most people. The important thing is getting enough money to live, pref in a role that fits your goals, even if it is below your capabilities. If you get to try out a new country at the same time, all the better!

OP: I did a working holiday in Australia some years ago now, it was great. Go for it! You'll never have an easier opportunity to see the world with a visa that allows you to earn :)
