Hey,

I’m a Geotechnical Engineer with one years experience working with a small consultancy firm in the UK.

I’m going to New Zealand this summer on a 2 year working holiday visa and was wondering what my chances were of getting a job in a similar field.(Geotechnical / Geoenvironmental). How’s the construction industry in NZL at the moment??

Any engineers out there or anybody got any info? I did a Geology degree so I’ve got transferable skills to other industries like mining, oil / gas etc.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Try www.beca.com.

No idea if they have jobs but they do have geo tech engineers so you never know

Hey, Im trying to do the same thing but I have a little less experience.

I'm just curious about one thing though, whats the two year working holiday visa? Is this a UK thing? If you are an engineer, why wouldnt you get a long term skill shortage visa?

As I understand it if your from the UK you can get the 2 year visa and work for up to 12 months. Im getting that for several reasons. First, because I may only be there for one or two years. Also because its an easier / quicker visa to get (I want to go this summer). If it turns out I want to stay longer then I will be in a better position to apply for the Skilled Migrant visa (having a job and being already in NZL).

Thats the plan anyway. Are you in the UK and working now??

No, I'm in Canada and not working. I looked at the working holiday visa but it says travel has to be the primary reason for going and I thought the skill shortage visa was the only one that applied.

There are always geotech jobs coming up on seek.co.nz as well as other geology type ones in mining mostly or the occasional oily one in Wellington or New Plymouth (there are a few on there as we speak ). I'd say the chances of finding something would be pretty high once your feet were on the ground - I know that all the site investigation/survey people down here in the S always seem to be busy.

I am also in the Engineering / Design Field, From what I have found you need tobe on the ground before you will get any real interest, But for the right person, you get a lot of interest, I got something like 5 responses, all very nice, and they basically said the same thing when I land call and arange interviews.
