I remember somewhere reading about BBN (?) Card that you can get for a particular chain of backpackers lodges - can anyone help, I just can't find them online!

Yeah, BBH is good. I've hostelled my way around NZ, now, and my favourite hostels have been the BBH ones. YHA is good, standard accom, but quite impersonal. I've always found BBH to be really clean, friendly and welcoming.
