So should I just be patient and wait to get a Case Officer to start the process (4 mths)

OR should hubby go over in the meantime and try and get a WP??

Has anyone done this? Especially with the recession, is it wise?

many people take different routes towards living in NZ, it really depends on your circumstances and how in demand your job is plus a whole load of other personal factors :D
