Hi this is Karen & Martyn, we are quite new to the forum (but have been visiting for a while and love the site).
Neither of us have any 'paper qualifications' just 25 years work experience!!! So we only have 50 points and need a job offer. We notice that some other Forum members have had interviews and not had any luck as they did not have PR. :( :( :(
Has anyone JUST GONE FOR IT and sold house, booked flights and arrived as vistors, then got job and applied for work permit. If so, would love to here from you.
One good bit of news this week is that Martyns job (Flexographic Printer [73317]) is now on the Immediate Skills Shortage List, so hopefully if we do just go he should not have any trouble getting a work permit, once he has job offer! :?
Would love to here from someone who is/has been in the same boat (or plane)!

Kia ora Karen and Martyn.
We are quite likely to end up doing exactly what you are thinking of. Neither mine nor Sarah`s (my wife) job are on the most wanted list. I have been e-mailing companies for a while now, and getting a similar response from all. "See you when you get here" is all I keep hearing.
I am a self employed decorator with over twenty years experience, and from what I am being told by those in the know, getting a job once there should be no problem at all.
I think at the very least, people in our position could do worse than getting down there and meeting potential employers face to face. An expensive exercise I know, but a good investment in one`s future.
Good luck, however you decide to play it.

Hello, yep quite a few people have just sold up and come over. Most people seem to succeed that way, getting first a work visa then applying for PR once they start the job. What part of Essex are you from.

Thanks for all your replies.
Martyn has emailed his CV to a few potential employers direct and had quite positive replies i.e we must ring for appointment when in NZ. One chap was very helpful in his reply so we asked him some additional questions about average wages, types of printing machines etc. to which he replied, so he is definitely on the MUST ring for interview list.
Veronica - we are in South Woodham Ferrers, nr Chelmsford
Timbo - a self employed decorator... you may come in handy!!! I'm also self employed but on the paperwork side. I'm a bookeeper for two carpenters and an electrician at the moment.

Hi Curtis,
We found that most people aren't interested in looking at your C.V./talking to you until you're on NZ soil.
We didn't just sell up & come over although we do know people who have & are here 20 odd years on. We came over for a week & a job agency set up some interviews for Ian once he knew we'd booked our flights. Ian was lucky - his job was in major shortage in Wellington at the exact time we came over so he was offered a job in the first interview he walked into & here we are some 6 months later - been living here 3 months & love it.
If you have the opportunity to come over first to do a recky visit I'd recommend it. However, I must say that if Ian hadn't got a job offer during that week we'd've sold up & just come out anyway.

YES.
As a caveat to that, though, if you're taking the very brave step of selling up & moving here I'd have to advise a visit first.
I personally didn't come out for a reccy....but I didn't have kids, house to sell, etc.
But don't be put off by all the red tape & other people's stories.

I agree with the above, We came over in May when the points were still too high to apply for residency. We spent a couple of weeks travelling and checking things out, and then DH got a job. We got the work permit's and will apply for residency some time soon.
Even if you come for a reccy though, be prepared for things to seem MUCH different when you are actually living here and earning Kiwi dollars.

We sold up everything and came here on visitors visas - we hadn't been to NZ before but felt we'd done enough research to know if we'd like it here or not. We LOVE it here, but things aren't all as we expected, the pro's still outweigh the con's and we've now bought a house and planted firm roots here - and now have PR.
I'm not sure a visit could give an accurate portrayal of actually living here - but it's a must if you want/need to secure work before arrival (although several forum members have secured work via telephone interviews, it isn't commonplace).

Been here twice last time two plus years ago
Had two on paper job offers and two further verbal offers which I declined before they arrved on paper.
Because I'ld been here and MOST IMPORTANTLY I'ld done some research about where we were going to live and how much it would cost we came.
You can do all the research on line about cost of living and this forum will help you in terms of how much relative to earnings here (very important)
Moving to NZ is no different to moving anywhere else in the world. The value of your savings in your last currency will vary and the value of your profession will vary. The local humanitarian values and standards will be different (If your from the UK they will probably be vastly different)
Do your research. We're all here to help but I doubt that any of us can honestly provide a compelling reason for YOU to move here

hi you two
we've just got back from a four week holiday/recci and would reccommend it if you have the finances.from houses to jobs you have to get some sort of feel for the area although we've only narrowed it down to 2.3 areas.most employers i spoke to have said that there would still be work in six months for me and there does seem plenty of work about.
