I am looking to move to NZ early in 2005 under the Work to Residence scheme. There seems to be very few postings about this route - is this because it is not used much or does not work?

Our (my-self and my family) plan is to go to NZ on holiday after selling up in England and look for a job (Project Manger) and get in that way.

Are we mad or is this a realistic route in?

Once I get a job, any idea of how long the visa takes?

I would appreciate any advice or experiences from others. :nice1

Hi,

We are about to do the exact same thing as you outlined above! In 2 days to be exact.

Can't speak for a family with kids, but we are just "going for it", no jobs to go to, we'll just suck it and see! Everything except one flat is sold up here so we're ready to settle there as and when the opportunity arises - and we've also been selectec from the EOI pool so that's a bonus....

:-)

We'll keep the forum posted on events.

Lipper,
interesting situation really.
Most people on here (in my humble opinion) have been selected or will be selected from the pool (EOI). so for them to sell everything and "just do it" is made a little easier because they don't need a job to go to before they obtain a visa.
I guess that like me you won't gain enough points for EOI until you have a firm job offer.
this means selling up, dragging the kids from school packing in work etc. to move 12k miles away with the prospect of not getting a job and coming back. or getting a job but the NZIS shove the selcetion point up to 20 million trillion rendering your efforts useless.
sorry if i sound a little negative here, but that is the situation i'm in.
Alas, i will go for it. i have to tie up a few loose ends here then pop over looking for work. if i get a job and EOI stays low i could be OK. if not i have to explore the temp visa route (not even the NZIS knows anything about that!) or WTR.
all in all my research always comes back to tell me that i have to be there first to get a job, then explore which route. bummer really! :(
I would be interested to see what you find out.
a good starting piont is NZIS and use the tools to see if you have skills etc for EOI.

Hi, I'm new to the forum, I'm Sarah & my partner Ian (Surveyor) and I (Sales Operations Manger) are looking to relocate to Wellington.

We're planning on doing exactly the same thing - I'm Sarah (Sales Operations Manager) & my partner Ian (Surveyor) and I (are looking to relocate to Wellington.

We have the opportunity to pop out for a week (I know its a really short time) between work contracts to double check if we really want to move there and to network & see for ourselves how possible its going to be.

My partner has interviews whilst I'm going to try to pop in to the Immigration office and see if I can talk to someone in Immigration out there about what the reality is for working to residence. I'll post another message after we've been if I find out any more information that will help anyone else.

Unless we sell up and go out there permanently we'll never know - at worst we'll have lost 6 months of trying rather than looking back later in life and regretting not taking the opportunity.

Can I suggest that, if you are going to be here just one week and have interviews and want to job hunt / network etc, that you go via LA/USA - the jet lag for us going via Singapore was evil and there is no way I could have whizzed around for interviews etc...

Glad we've left a day to recover before the first interview. Thanks for the tip about the stopover. Fingers crossed we'll both be awake enough :hopeso
