Before I left the UK in mid March for a very comfortable and enjoyable 3 weeks in old R2D2 Spaceship I downloaded FREE NZ maps onto my Sat Nav (Garmin StreetPilot C510) from:
http://mapcenter2.cgpsmapper.com/maplist.php?country=165®ion=176&category=2
and apart from a few glitches using 'search' the maps worked brilliantly.
Having a Sat Nav on our reccie made a huge difference and took the stress out of getting from A-B, trying to working out how long it'll take and which route etc.
