Here's a strange question,

I have a bike rack that I would really like to bring with me to NZ. It connects to a car via a USA 2 inch trailer hitch. Would this work in NZ? Just curious.

Apparently, the standard hitch here is 1.78 inches. I found this out when booking a rental van for a festival I was working on. Whether this is helpful to you is unknown! :) I think though that 2" is pretty standard here...someone with more experience and knowledge might be able to chip in :)

The standard is 1 7/8" (not 1.78") but 2" (50mm) is not uncommon.

It's not a problem, I carry both in my car because one of my trailers has 2" ball. It is a one minute job to change over and you can get fancy ones that are even simpler than that.

So did a little more research, what I am specifically talking about is the Hitch Receiver. So it is the size of the square hole on the car itself. Not the size of the ball on the hitch. Is there a standard size of the square hole in NZ? In the US the 2 standard sizes are 1.25" and 2.0". My bike rack fits a 2"x2" hitch receiver. Sorry for not being clear.

Ah! that style of towbar is quite unusual here; by far the most common is a piece of flat bar with the ball bolted through. If your bike rack is a good one I'd bring it anyway. Having the necessary adapter made up, one which would bolt to the towbar and which would accept your 2" square rack, should not be a big or expensive job.
