Hey Guys,
I'm just looking for some general information here. I have a degree in Quantity Surveying from Ireland and just wondering what are the job prospects for Estimating/Quantity Surveying in New Zealand? Thanks

From my extensive job search to date (on the PM side of things, not QS/Estimating) there are still opportunities if you have experience in roadwork and infrastructure. If your background is in commercial building, opportunities seem scarcer, but still available. Building construction? As we say in New York -- fuhgedaboudit!

Cheers for the reply. I had a quick look through seek but I never like to base an opinion on jobs available on the internet. Well I am only graduated with the degree in QS a year but have been working as a technician in an Architectural/Engineering office since graduation and for the past 4 years on and off during college. I could work in that sector either.
Everyone seems to want to go to Australia to look for work but New Zealand always had a greater appeal to me for some reason.

...Building construction?...
I meant to say "residential" building construction.
BTW, not sure if you know this, but the QS position basically doesn't exist in the USA. I was lucky enough to have a few colleagues of Irish origin who were able to explain to me the CM process in a UK/Ireland/NZ context so I didn't sound like a complete idiot during several Skype interviews.
Good luck.

So if you say the QS position doesn't exist in the US what is the equivilent? Construction Management?

By CM and PM I'm guessing you mean Construction Management and Project management? Hope I dont sound stupd here!
Is Quantity Surveying recognised in New Zealand? Would I have any luck applying for jobs in Construction Management side of things?

The tender management side is typically an Estimating function in the USA; contract management generally falls to Project Management.

Yes, that's what I meant. Sorry if the acronyms weren't clear (I really shouldn't use them -- this is a general forum).
...Is Quantity Surveying recognised in New Zealand?...
Absolutely. I'm the one with a bit of difficulty translating skills and experience into local practice -- not you.
