If its a DAB radio then as a general rule the answer is no.

There are some trials in some areas but it is likely that they will use DAB+ if they do decide to broadcast using that system.

Does your radio also have an FM option? If so, then that part will still work.

A quick forum search brings up this: http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-6247.html

But that was some time ago- have a look here: http://www.digitalradio.co.nz/

Unless things have changed the real issue may be that the sort of band or wave (not sure of the correct terms, lol!) is different to the one UK radios are used to receiving- unless you get a 'triwave', which receives global digital- Pure do a gorgeous one but I can't get it here in Oz.

Hi,
I've just purchased portable internet radio to allow me to continue to listen to Radio 5 Live, etc. It uses an ethernet or wireless connect to your router

The Radio is the Roberts WM202 for £146 from John Lewis. The radio also has FM & DAB.

NB. Radio 5 Live doesn't have the rights to broadcast live football outside of the UK but all other programmes are there.

Hi Andy&Carol, you know you can listen to BBC radio online or podcast shows and listen via your mp3 player or stereo.

I feel your pain though- for ages I just missed the BBC commentary on life. I wanted the BBC to be in NZ, the Archers to shift to rural Canterbury etc.

Thanks Kanga, I've half-heartedly tried to listen to 'on air now' programmes, it's always at breakfast time that I feel I need BBC Radio, but because I'm always rushing around it's quicker to just switch the radio on! Radio NZ National is good for talk radio.

Strangely, I miss the Archers too! And Radio 2. :wah

Small price to pay I suppose!

Cheers, Carole

I agree- but you don't need to 'listen live' and therefore have evening shows at breakfast etc (I can't stand that- I'm 9hrs ahead of the Beeb here so can listen live to lots but I don't want to have everything topsy turvey) have you looked at BBC R4 iplayer? http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/radio/bbc_radio_four

If you find your favourite show to listen to (I liked Woman's Hour for after the school run doing chores), bookmark it then you're only a few clicks away from listening to the latest show whenever you want. Do you have decent speakers attached to your PC or laptop?

Radio NZ is pretty good but it took some getting used to music after news reports and the slightly less robust, sloppier standard of journalism- I think the ideal would be to listen to Radio NZ to get your ear in on NZ news and the BBC world service for global news and then Radio 4 for comedy (particularly anything with Richard Herring), The Archers and all the excellent programmes they have ... moral maze, thinking allowed, all in the mind, Reith lectures, Woman's Hour, from our own correspondant, the afternoon play ... Oh wah- I'm all missing Radio 4 now- it isn't the same when living out of the UK :wah:wah:wah

OOOOOO, I'm all salivating over this now: http://www.revoradio.co.nz/digital-radio/revo-blik-radiostation.php

I'm not really bothered about TV (and I totally HATE the ads) and we only had one for half the time we were in NZ (and have my mother's here) and would be totally unbothered if we never had one (partner disagrees though!) but if I was stranded on a desert island I'd really, really miss radio- it just works for me in the way TV rarely does.

Thanks guys, I really need to get into listening online - and world service on the radio. I REALLY miss the beeb now! Is I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue back on with a new host yet? Is Jonathan Ross out of the doghouse? How's Ed Grundy? So many questions!!

Radio NZ was absolutely priceless a couple of Saturdsys ago - I was lying in bed listening to (honestly this is no exaggeration) a half hour interview about broccoli followed by a 'rock' version of Old McDonald had a farm. I had to pinch myself to make sure I was awake and not in some surreal dreamland!

Sorry Britzy, kind of highjacked your thread. You may have gathered 'tho that good radio isn't something NZ is famous for!

Cheers all, Carole

How's Ed Grundy?

There be Grundys back at Grange Farm :nice1 I love the Grundys, although my favourite characters are Lillian and Linda. Linda delivered one of her finest last week: "compromise is often just another word for mediocrity" :laugh

Well I only ever listen to More FM, The Breeze or Radio NZ on my way to the station. Or if I'm feeling extremely lazy, on my way driving into Wellington. :D

Well we have a PURE EVOKE 3 and one of the reasons we chose that one (apart fromt he ability to record from it) is that we were told that it DOES work with Dab+ Haven't tried Dab+ yet though. Still here in UK

I'm Sorry... is indeed back - several people are taking turns hosting it (stephen fry, jack dee etc). we were lucky enough to get tickets to go see the stephen fry recording! (with victoria wood as the guest).

R4 will be one of the things i miss most when we move.

Also, Archers is available as a podcast as are the excellent In Out Time, Start The Week etc

FYI,

I arrived from the UK this month with my UK DAB Radio (Pure Evoke Flow) and it works fine here in Auckland. There are 9 DAB/DAB+ stations including BBC World Service and the reception is excellent provided you don't get too far from the city center. Its part of a DAB+ trial in New zealand run by Kordia and I believe they are running the trials in Wellington and maybe Christchurch also.

If you plan to bring a DAB radio and you are going to live in one of the few locations where DAB is transmitted check that the radio is DAB+ compatible or there is an upgrade available. DAB+ is different from DAB and is not backward compatible.

The Pure Evoke Flow is DAB+ out of the box so I was lucky.

DAB radios from Australia should work as they have a DAB+ network now.

Of course, NZ has not made a decision on whether to go DAB or DAB+ in the long term so it might all get switched off at some future date.

Forgot to mention this earlier - our Pure One radio started working on DAB a few weeks ago. Not too many channels but it is nice falling asleep to the BBC World Service now!

I'm using the pure evoke flow in Christchurch but no dab here YET!

Internet radio is great through. I also use stitcher radio apps on the iPhone and got lots of great podcast and if they don't have what you want just email stitcher and they will add it for you.

Just unpacked my DAB radios, and am pleased to discover they do work here. We're in Wellington - Wadestown, so a bit out of the centre - and they work fine. Only a few stations of course. Sounds like the same trial mentioned above.

Lucky buggers.

We barely get FM in Martinborough, never mind DAB!

If it wasn't for the internet, I'd never listen to the radio as I detest hissy reception and that is all we can get on normal FM radios.

World Service is no longer available down here on SW I believe, so I have to get that via internet - which is annoying because it means I have to listen in my office!

Sorry, if this thread is dormant because it's a dead subject that nobody is interested in and by replying to my own posting is taboo...

I'm currently in a hotel near Queen Street in Auckland with my Roberts WM202 that survived the journey. It's plugged in to the mains as I removed the batteries to conserve my baggage allowance and its tuned into NATIONAL (a Radio 4 type news station) via DAB. This is the first non-music station that I found that sounded interest, but is there a New Zealand equivalent to Radio 5 Live?
