What made you move to New Plymouth?

..and are you happy that you made the right choice?

I guess no one lives there?! Potentially moving there myself, so curious to know what people have to say...

Hi, only just seen your thread....

We've been here 9 months now and we love it. We're a family of 4, the kids are 5 and 7.

From my wife looking over my shoulder....The sea, the mountain, the surf, no traffic, no problems parking, community spirit.
Dislikes - miles to get anywhere else (Auckland 6 hrs, Wellington 5 hrs, Taupo 5 hrs, Palmy North 3 hrs, Hamilton 3hrs), lack of choice in shops(female point of view), I think its fine.

From me...Its off the beaten track a bit!! We cant compare it to anywhere else, as we've only lived here, but there's just something about the place. We were reluctant to come here as we thought it appeared a little dull with little to do, but now living here we feel we have definitely made the right choice. It has got a certain something.

We have a very pro-active mayor here and he has been instumental in getting the town to be the up and coming place that it is.

I'm not sure about the employment levels here, but we have the oil and farm industries, so we are not as affected by the recession. But as my wife says, we are miles from anywhere else.

We've got the beaches if you're into surfing. Some of the guys at work are into kyacking(both sea and river). We've got the mountain if you're into skiing(I've been twice this year already).

There's Pukekura Park where in the summer, we have the festival of lights and a different band (local and national) playing every night for free. You can go along with your picnic and wine and just crash on the grass listening to the music.
Also in the summer, there's some kind of carnival or activity happening somewhere, either in town or down the coast in Oakura or Opunake.

We have the big Americana car festival(although not sure if its happening next year). About 400 american cars descend on New Plymouth for a weekend. And a big high street parade on friday night which is pretty cool.

This year we've had Billy Connolly, Simply Red and Jimmy Barnes play here, amongst other NZ bands like Shihad and Opshop.

The longest you would have to travel across town from one end to the other, would be 15 mins max(by car). I ride my bike to work, 5 mins.
Rush hour lasts for about 10 mins. My wife cracked up the first time she saw this. She said she turned around, and the long line of traffic that was there, just disappeared!!

There's loads of coffee shops and nice little restauranty places to go to. The town centre isnt massive but it still takes a good hour to walk round all the shops. I love walking round the centre.

The coastal walkway is right next to the town as well, which is stunning(the picture in my avatar). Its a 6 km walkway along the front of New Plymouth. We have spent many sundays as a family on bike rides down to the Big Wave Cafe and sitting on their comfy chairs, drinking coffee and looking out to sea.

Its not perfect, there are some issues, which I dont think are massive and I think you'll find in many other places. For instance, the guys at work tell me, its getting worse for fights at the weekends, but I was out on Friday and I didnt see anything remotely bad. We have boy racers, but they're not a nuisance.
Also, there dosnt appear to be a big gang culture here. I work with about 5 young guys, who have lived here all their lives and they never mention gangs. Dont get me wrong, I'm sure its there, but it's not a big thing, it certainly dosnt make the local paper.

I feel very safe here and have no problems walking around the place with my family. And having the sea next to us, seems to have a very calming effect, especially on me!!

Anyway, I've gone on a bit, but basically we like it!!!!

If there's anything in particular you want to know, just ask. :nice1

Motleybeast, thanks for a swift and expansive reply...you almost have me sold with that one! As your wife rightly points out, it is the remoteness that is probably the main detractor...otherwise it is pretty much perfect. If things work out, I might just have to look you up!

Have you had the experience of skiing/snowboarding at Mt. Ruapehu and Mt. Egmont yet? How do they compare in terms of powder and steepness?

We're off to Ruapehu in 3 weeks, so I'll let you know then. Egmont is actually quite good, its just very small (it takes about 5 minutes to do the bottom part of the ski-field) and a little bit bumpy. And its a 30 minute walk from the car park to the ski-field.
It is pretty good quality though, not much ice.
The steepness is about the same as europe for black and blue runs, if you've been, nothing too taxing. And apparently you can board off the top of Egmount on good days(which is my aim one day!!). There's also a nice little bit at the bottom of the ski-field for kids and learners, again, quite small though.
The other thing is that the bottom of the ski-field is only at 1200m. So, it dosnt have a good coverage all the time. As we speak, its closed from lack of snow, but we're expecting a good dump this week. When we do have snow, its open straight away. It is a local ski-field!!

Its just the fact that its only 40 minutes from my doorstep. I drive up with my kit on, put my jacket and boots on in the car park, walk up and I'm there.

Motleybeast, thank you!

http://www.skitaranaki.co.nz is Mt. Egmont's official website right?

Does it have a half-pipe and a terrain park for snowboarders?

Motleybeast
19th June 2009, 12:42 AM
PortlandORUSA, yes, thats the website. Also has a webcam so you can see the coverage. The webcam shows about 80% of the bottom ski-field, so that should give you some idea of the size of the runs.
And no half pipe or terrain park I'm afraid.

I must show my OH your comments. It was funny we early on thought that we had settled upon Christchurch as an agreed destination but as we have moved through the wait we keep chanign our mind and New Plymouth was starting to look very interesting.

Why do I get the feeling that I am going to end up in a campervan travelling NZ?

If it is just the two of you and you're not desparate to get settled and find work, then why not?! Spend 6 months getting a feel for every city/town in the whole country...I would love to have that luxury.

The downside I heard was that New Plymouth is very small.

It is but, I was surprised to find that the population is about 50k...somewhat bigger than I expected. The biggest downer for me is the proximity to anywhere else. I need to write a big list of weighted pros and cons and see how it all balances out

For all you guys that arent sure about New Plymouth, it was never top of our list either, Tauranga was. We had the luxury of being able to have a bit of a tour round and when we ended up in Tauranga, there was no work for me.
I had the interview here lined up just before we came out. So we came down, I did the interview and we stayed for about 2 days. We carried on round the North Island going through Taupo, Rotarua, Papamoa and then Tauranga, no work for me anywhere. So we did the Coromandel (holiday mode by now!!) and then to Auckland. Had an interview at North Shore and got offered the job. But by now, I had been offered the job in New Plymouth as well!! One sleepless night later, we decided on here.

It was a combination of lifestyle that we wanted and wether we could afford to live in Auckland. We decided on here, because we thought it might be a bit nearer to our NZ dream, which it is. I've got nothing against Auckland, but we felt it wasnt for us. We feel we've made the right decision and we really like it for all the reasons I mentioned before. It didnt take us long to realise it either.
Yes, it is a bit out of the way, but thats kind of the beauty a little bit. We're lucky, in that, my family and I dont mind traveling, so we go out of Taranaki every now and then, we certainly dont get cabin fever!! Makes us go and see more of this beautiful place. And you get use to the travel times!!

Basically, at the moment, I think its important to go where your work is, but if you do have a chance, check us out!!

If only it were that simple, but unfortunately we have two little people in tow. Not that six months in a campervan would do them any harm I am sure but I think that it might be better for them not to get into too much of a holiday mode as school may be a shock!

Basically, at the moment, I think its important to go where your work is

I think that will be the important thing for us to Motleybeast.

They're seven. One could do with a trek from school but would hate it as he loves school. The other hates school and I am not sure that I would find it terribly easy to get him back there if he were away too long.....but we will see what the future holds for us and what the finances are like...a tour would be a brilliant way to start a new life!

Motleybeast I have only just found this thread because for some reason I hadn't even thought of Taranaki as a potential place to go to until today! You should work for the New Plymouth tourist board because you have sold the place beautifully!

I'm way off actually coming to NZ but I love reading all the posts about the places I'm interested in. Up until now, Hastings and Napier, Tauranga, and Nelson have been top of my list, but after reading your post, NP is up there too!

I'm almost bursting with excitement about coming to NZ on a caravaning holiday in 2010 so I can see it all for myself!

I like New Plymouth and I don't find it too big a deal being far from places, we have flown a few times to Wellington and Auckland, it's only about 45 minutes and there's quite a lot of things locally. I think if you're able to spend some time looking at different places you can get a feel of what is right for you.

Just got back from a three-day stay in New Plymouth, and I was very favorably impressed. Everything that's great about New Zealand is there. If you don't need to live in or near a big city, you should check out Taranaki.

Probably too late for the original poster but there may be others that stumble upon this thread.

We moved to NP 6 years ago after originally planning to go to Christchurch. We have 2 school age boys and it has been a very good childhood for them here.

However, we have decided to leave. Loads of reasons and not an easy decision. New Plymouth's isolation is both its greatest asset and its worst. We really feel that there is not enough here to sustain us.

If anyone out there wants some specifics on NP please get in touch would be very happy to pass on any useful info.

Hi All,

This is a really interesting thread, we're moving to NP in a couple of months. I've got a job in one of the Oil & Gas companies and my wife and son are coming out with me. If anyone has got any specific recommendations for a NP newbie I would much appreciate the advice. We're really looking forward to our new life in Taranaki, our London life is getting a little tiresome.

I guess the big things concerning us at the moment is finding a good place to rent and what area? We need to buy a car (or campa???) so I need a trustworthy dealer and then a garage to service and repair. I'm sure there are plenty of other issues that will come up as we spend more time working out what we need for our day to day living.

Cheers

Hi Dai,

I don't come on here very often anymore but look in from time to time, so I've only just noticed your comments.

Well done on getting the job, nice one.

We've been here now for just over 2 and a bit years, and as you've read, we quite like it, and still do. I think, you're coming to a great place. A bit quieter than London!!

Anyways, good areas of New Plymouth? Whalers Gate, Hurdon, Frankleigh Park, Westown, Brooklands, Vogeltown, Welbourn, Highlands Park and Merrilands. You will definitely find something good in that lot. But, of course, at the end of the day it'll be down to cost of weekly rent.

As for a vehicle, you've got Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Suzuki, Nissan, Holden, Ford and Mitsubishi main dealers here. And there's plenty of independant garages as well. Work out what you want to buy and then let me know.

Anything else, just holler. (Or PM me!).

Good luck with the move.

Hello Motleybeast,

I've just read this thread and have some questions about NP' as we are considering moving there.
We're trying to figure out how provincial the place is :-).
afternoon activities for the kids etc.
our son (9.5 year old) wants to learn to play the drums and\or guitar - is there a place for that or tutors?

if you see this message we would very much like to make contact.

Hi There,

Yeah, just ask away. Although, I dont know what you mean about "How provincial" the place is???

In answer to your question about the drum/guitar tutors, there's at least 3 music shops here and a few private tutors. I can give you 1 name straight away, as I did a job at his house.

Afternoon activities - plenty of outdoor stuff, skate parks, surfing and swimming-2 beaches just 5 mins from town centre, aqautic centre, we always find something to do with our 2 kids (7 and 9). Indoor activites are not so great. The local play centre has just closed down but you do have the YMCA which has a gym, climbing wall and indoor courts. Scouts are also here. I cant think of everything straight away, but we're not short of stuff to do.

Let me know, if there is anything else.
