Hi I went out today to buy myself some shoes and boots and went into two decent shoe shops in Wellington town to be told that shoes don't come in size 4(37) that all there shoes start from 5 and up  what am I to do if this is the case.
Is there anyone out there had this problem.
Thanks for any information.

remember the sizes are not the same here. I take 5 in English sizes but 7 here so maybe you should look at NZ size 6.

Well if it's any consolation I have the opposite problem. I wear a size 12. I have to shop at specialty shoe shops where most of the shoes look like they're for old women.

I wear a UK 4, and I bought myself a couple of pairs of shoes on my last visit to NZ, so it's not true that they don't exist. I can't remember actually looking at the size label - I just homed in on what looked like my feet, as it were.

Found this, though not sure how accurate it is. http://productsfromnz.com/size#women
Shoes are always tricky IMO. Haven't had to buy shoes here yet but in the US every brand, and often styles within brands, was different in fit for me.

Hmmmm, not sure that is correct. I was a wearer of 7.5 (either got 7 or 8's normally as half sizes were hard to come by) but find I'm an 11 here in NZ :( although somewhere between a 10 and 11 would be ideal.

Currently trying to buy shoes of our DD1 = hard, hard work. She came out of school yesterday with her UK Startrites telling me they'd broken - the sole was flapping off. Quick trip to the shops told me that a 12 is too small, but a 13 is way, way too big.........thankfully Mr Minit was able to glue the sole back on overnight. Hopefully this will last until she fits a 13. (Only one shop had a size gauge!)

It's the same for men's shoes

Ah the joy of buying shoes. I went looking for an 8-9 UK and assumed I needed an 8-9 NZ.
I couldn't find any, then I tried a few pairs. it turns out I need an 11-12 or somthing like that.

I gave up, now I just go into a shoe shop and try the flipping things on. I did learn one thing the same shoes cost about half the price in Upper Hutt relative to Wellington.

:laugh ok you have to ignore all the gum boots in upper hutt, ask for something not suitable for chasing a cow in, and they will show you to the back of the shop. I love the people in upper hutt thier so em em practical

I have my doubts about that chart, too. It's giving a European 36 as equivalent to UK 4 AND 4 1/2, whereas I (UK 4) usually find I best fit a European 37.

I've just been and found my NZ shoes. It turns out they're the same brand, and announce that they're 'small', but with '4' in small print. So that's no help about NZ sizes whatever!

I've now had another hunt, and both these charts seem to think NZ sizes are the same as the UK - I wonder if those larger ones mentioned earlier are US sizes?

be warned the sizes vary we ended in going to Porirua, Wellington, j'ville and Hutt on Saturday all telling us we were different sizes some quote US sizes and do not understand UK sizes Hubby is a UK 6 which in UK is hard he now has to go into Chidrens sizes here great for trainiers as long as he does not want flashing lights but school shoes abousloute no!!
Also depending where you shop depends on stock as shops stock to local popuation, those areas with asian population will have smaller sizes those with pacific/maori larger sizes

well i bought several pairs of shoes for myself and my daughter in NZ and the sizes were the same as the UK size with one exception.....American branded shoes, which were of course in american sizes! its easiest if you cross check the size against the european size if you are not sure if it is american or UK, and of course you gotta try them on anyway and then you'll know if its the right size!

I didn't like buying shoes much in NZ- felt like I had enormous feet but 6.5 in the UK.

Well I just went shoe shopping (Hooray for Willow Shoes for women with big feet), and my US size (12) is the same as New Zealand Sizes. I remember UK sizes being different though. I also have been to several shoes stores where the sizes are in different numbers (UK, US, NZ, or European) depending on the shoe, it's so confusing!

All three of my daughters wear a UK4 and all find shoes in their size, no trouble! Can't remember what NZ size they get but will check and let you know.

My feet are about 6.5-7 in the UK, which is quite big and I found myself buying anything from 9-11 in NZ, which if you're from the UK feels MASSIVE! :)

Same for me - the HUGE NZ sizes I've bought make my feet sound massive too. OH on the other hand has only gone from an 8 to a 9 or 10 - although he's happy with that ..... "Big feet, big ???" :laugh

Some have stamped in them, Uk size ....., Us size......; not actually that helpful! Only way is to try on as like anywhere different sizes vary.

My daughters say an NZ 7 usually fits, but as other people have said, they try 7-8 to start and see what's best. (BTW,they're 21, 18 and 11 - but I do go with the 11 year-old!)

Yeah, definitely not all the shops are the same and I always end up in a fumble asking the shop assistants for the size to try on. Generally the NZ size will be one to two sizes bigger than your UK size (women only) - mens are mostly the same.

I usually tell the shop assistant I am a UK 6 to 6.5 and they generally know which size to get, unfortunately though we have to pay the heftier prices for decent fitting shoes.

http://www.kumfs.co.nz/size-fit/size-fit.aspx are an NZ company and they do Euro sizing, which makes life easier.

As a company founded by podiatrists, KUMFS really know feet, which is why such emphasis is placed on fit. Most Kumfs styles come in sizes 4 - 12 including half sizes (in Euro sizing that's 35-44).

That would be UK sizes 2.5 to 11

The only other decent places I know that aren't cheap plastic fashion shoes, or conversely cheap plastic fashion shoes with designer labels and matching price tags are Ecco and Hush Puppies.

That chart is well out of whack, little wonder we all have sore feet wearing the wrong size shoes. :laugh
