we have been looking for jobs for nearly 2 months now with pretty much no luck. we have tried applying for everything including shelf packing at pak and save but heard nothing.

i work in the IT industry as a trade, and i have had 2 interviews (still waiting to hear back from one) but other than that... nothing.

we have been searching seek, trademe and careerjet everyday and we apply for what we can but still havent got anything back.

my girlfreind (who is a florist by trade) has a 2 week job as a cust service rep in the new floor in the westpack mall at the end of the month which is at least something.

today i am going to do what i thought i would never have to.... get application forms for Mc donalds and other establishments :( it has got that bad!

other than websites and the weekend paper, is there any other ways of getting quick part/full time work, kinda like a job centre?

or if anyone knows of any work going then please give me a shout! :)

No advice to offer, just wanted to say I think you're right to take anything for now and keep looking- any port in a storm and all that. Hoping for some good luck for you soon.

Hi there,
it helps to have a good network of IT people, a lot of them seem to know each other and Christchurch is a small place. Check out the Canterbury software cluster website
www.canterburysoftware.org.nz
they organise events/ talks and it is a good way to get to know people. Not sure if it will get you a job but no harm to try.

thanks for the replys! :)

i have applied for a few more jobs today, some retail and some other random jobs that dont require experience.

it takes a while writing a good cover letter for each one especially when its just a part time position but i hope to stand out from the others.

thanks for the reccomendation for the IT club, although i am in IT infrastructure support and security i think i will still attend the next talk, i have signed up for the news letter and the next one is next month.

christ church is definatly our favorate place in NZ, but i am starting to wonder if we would have had better luck in wellington :uhoh

James, although this is a Wellington-based group, you might want to see if you can network through them, too: http://up.org.nz/ This group, Unlimited Potential, recently added the former Wellies group to their membership. The Wellies were a group of expat IT professionals. Best of luck!

Have you been in touch with Christchurch City Council? Not sure what type of IT experience you have and if its right for the vacancies they have but I do now that there are some vacancies in the IT Department at the moment.

I know people in CCC, what makes you think there are vacancies?

i have just been on the website and i cant see any jobs listed,

i will put together a cover letter and a CV and send it into them anyway incase there is anything.]

so far this week i have been told there is limited work at most of the fast food places round here, plus i cant even find any factory opening.

still been applying for IT jobs, 2 support jobs came on Seek yesterday for 1st and 2nd line support which are jobs i would easily be able to walk into no probs at home, (i have been working as an infrastructure engineer for the last 5 years, and been in IT support for 10).

is sunday the only day for job listing in the christchurch papers? i normally look in the careers section in the press on a sunday but it would be good if there were other resources like that.

cheers for all the replays and the IT networking sites :nice1

Hi

Hope you get a job soon, fingers crossed :) I think the Press also has jobs on a Wednesday, not 100% sure but worth a look tomorrow.

If I hear of anything locally I will send you a message.

Its the same in Auckland mate - I've been out of work for 7 months now. The place is a disaster zone for IT people out of work..

cheers a&g i will take a look when i am in the libary tomorrow (in there most days using the free wifi :) ) and thanks for the lookout :cheers

Paul & Rach - i was thinking i made a mistake coming to christchurch because i thought all the IT jobs would be in aukland and wellington, guess its the same anywhere you go.

we have applied for a few more today, even saw a store position advertised in a window which may be ok for my gf!

Hi, We own 3 small retail businesses. While our businesses are fine, I can tell you that in general retail (other than the big box stores) just aren't hiring now.

Our experience when we arrived was that Kiwis did not much respond to applications...you had to try to get in face to face. In the US, often written applications are very effective. Possibly this is not other people's experience...but it was ours.

Good Luck....

You haven't actually said what field of IT you are in. I work in the CCC IT department and I wouldn't expect any vacancies to be advertised there for a month or two, when the new financial year kicks in. Other companies may be in the same position.

Depending on what you are after Gen-i might be worth a shot. The DHB has quite a large IT department too.

i am a 2nd & 3rd level support enginner so anything desktop/server/network (cisco)

i got turned down for a job yesterday because of my WH visa, they said they couldent take me on because i could only work 3months on my visa. i did explain to them that i can simply apply for a work permit for up to 3 years if i got an offer of employment but she still said they wernt allowed to do that.

pretty annoying...

Ugh there are virtually no IT jobs in CHCH right now...

There are are few specialist jobs in programming and the like but thats normal.
Almost every other subcategory of IT seems dead.
