Hi guys,

My daughter has semi afro hair and has wanted to have it straightened/relaxed for years. I personally think her hair is beautiful however she hates it, partly because it's such hard work and I do sympathise. So for her birthday this year I was going to take her to a hairdresser to get it done.

In the UK I did alittle research and spoke to some hairdressers and they emphasized I would need to go to a hairdresser that specialised in afro hair as 'normal' hairdressers just wouldn't have anything strong enough (and they may cock it up). So, have been on the look out for an afro hairdresser but no luck as yet.

I'm in Pram Beach, Kapiti and I'm willing to drive up to an hour roughly in any direction! So if you know of any I could contact I would be very grateful (it would also make my daughter's thirteenth birthday :yes)

I know exactly what your daughter is going through as I too have naturally curly hair and always dreamed of having it straight.

After many years of battling my curls I have finally got it just the way I want it. I have tried everything from ironing it to chemically straightening it!!! I think in the end I just wore it down, because it sure is easier to manage now!!! :laugh

What I will say though is, that although this is a very effective method for straightening curly/afro hair, the roots will ultimately come back with a kink in them when the hair starts to grow again, and as many curly haired people know, our hair grows back pretty darn quick.

This could therefore end up being quite an expensive option, and the chemicals will also take their toll on the hair. Mine ended up being quite dry, and I had to buy expensive serums to make it look better.

I had it done in the UK and it did last quite a while. I haven't had it done since, as I just could not bring myself to spend that kind of money again. It may be cheaper here, I'm not sure.

What I ended up doing was investing in a GHD straightner (approx $300 here in NZ). Fantastic!!! Great results and at a fraction of the salon cost :clap (see web link below):
