Hello!
My family is moving to Taupo for a job my husband is taking at theWairiki Research Centre. He leaves in a few weeks and my son (age 14) and I will be joining him in January. I'm planning on a July visit to figure out the schools a bit (and to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary!), so I'll have a chance to look around before my big move.
I've heard from Rich Adams that Taupo has a wonderful wine store. Any other information or first hand knowledge of the area will be quite welcome.

my ex owned a house in taupo 11 yrs ago. we used to go down to it from time to time and i remember it being big, calm and pleasant. dont mean the house (which took ages to sell)! was impressed. big park in the center - they had a shower facility for backpackers and a little train to run you around, great play area etc. fishing apparently marv

We have been there a couple of times and it is a lovely place.

We drove round the lake and saw some fab views :nice1 . Lots of places to see round the area aswell, Huka Falls, Craters of the Moon, Rainbow Mountain.

It only takes about 50 mins from Rotorua, a nice drive down :nice1

There is a nice place on the main road just south of Taupo (on way to Wtn not Napier) They had rooms with spa pools and looked straight onto the lake - esp nice for an anniversary!!! :P :P

:exit :eek

Really nice - nicely near the thermal area which I adore!!!! (love rottenrua)
