Satirical quiz programme on BBC called 'Have I got News for You' - this weekend hosted by Aussie Rolph Harris.
They brought up a news report from New Zealand's Lincoln University that Sav Blanc smelt like cat's pee.
Rolph Harris - "What surprises me is not that it smells like cat pee but that New Zealand has a University"
A Panalist - " You'll get letters Rolph"
Harris - "Yeh but they'll be in crayon"
A Panalist - "Well, emails then"
Harris - " Yeh, in 20 years".

I used to play tennis with Rolf in Sydenham (we didnt get proper celebs!).... he was rubbish and about as quick witted as a turnip.. so it is a fairly safe bet that it was scripted!

True about the emails though! Or more, the internet speeds. I should charge out for the lost personal time waiting for webpages to load ;)

There's only one kiwi bar/restaurant in New York City (that I know of, anyway).
Have a look at their wine menu:

Speaking as an employee of one of the nations leading internet service providers, I have to agree. Both bandwidth, latency and data caps both suck and blow in this country. Yet you'll hear them all the time use some twisted statistics to claim that service here is better than in the UK. Hollow laugh.

Faster than the UK!? What a funny joke! :laugh Wait..
Seriously though, they say it will be ten years before they get high speed (haha) internet capabilities to all homes but I reckon in ten years there will be a whole new way of delivering it! If you know what I mean.
(I don't have the lingo, can you tell?)
Even Ireland is better, (which is quite depressing because it was fairly average anyway) probably because of some English providers also having a stake in the market..

The annoying thing is it should be easy to get fast internet to the bulk of the NZ population, because the vast majority live in urban centers, compared to most countries of similar socio-economic status.
However, broadband penetration is good in New Zealand. Lots of people have it. It's just not very good or very cheap.

Oh totally. In Ireland the population is Dublin heavy, then smattered around compared to here (same population, different sized land mass) and I still know people without broadband because its not viable at the moment to put it out to wee villages where not everyone has a computer. Thats the rationale I imagine.
The expense is definately the hard one..mostly because the speed and caps, as you said, are craptacular.
