Have just arrived in Browns Bay area North Shore last week. Spent the last week getting the kids sorted for school. Both girls started school today, and it has just hit me that I'm on the other side of the world and know no one, not a very nice feeling!!
I am a nurse and will look for work in a few weeks time once the girls are settled, but how do I meet people in the meantime?? OH is at work all day, so he's ok in that he has contacts at work.
I am from a relatively small town in Ireland where I knew sooo many people and they knew us (not always a good thing!!), but this just feels weird not knowing a soul. Any ides=as would be much appreciated or if there is anyone out there living fairly locally I would love to meet up:). Thanks in anticipation of your helpful replies

You might look for local classes and groups of things you are interested in.
The local council web pages often have links to community events, or if you have hobbies that have shops for supplies going to the store and asking about classes or groups might also be helpful.

I think hobbies and interests are the way to go and if you didn't really have any in the UK (I was a sah parent and sort of let that take over so didn't really have any!!) then perhaps it's a good chance to adopt something that appeals. Libraries often have book groups, which is a good one because it involves chatting (and sometimes cake).

Quite by accident, I've found the easiest way to meet neighbors is to start a project in my front garden. Spending a few hours creating a new flowerbed or other beautifying touch will give your neighbors an opportunity and a reason to come over and talk. Plus, you have a readymade topic of conversation.
