I'm interested to know the experiences of any South Africans in Dunedin. Most South Africans seem to head for the Auckland North Shore. I heard Afrikaans spoken a few times while I was there. Are there any South Africans in Dunedin, and if so, how have you coped with the extreme temperatures?

I know one Zimbabwean, does that count?

We'll give him honorary status! It's sad in a way that most South African's head to Auckland. They miss out on so much of what other parts of New Zealand have to offer. The North Shore is almost like an SA enclave.

Almost??? I work in Albany, in a company of 28, 3 from SA. Everytime I go to the mall across the road from our office I hear an SA accent. Quite scary. No offence to all the SA people that do end up On The Shore, but we are going rural. And still hope to head further south one day. If the job hadn't turned up in Auckland, and the market hadn't been so quiet, we'd definitely have ended up in Welly or Christchurch.

I agree - I spent a few days there last year. Lovely place, but I get the impression that most people go there as a matter of course, without even considering anywhere else.

There are a fair few from RSA here in Wanaka, some long term, so maybe it's not too much of an issue :)

we are originally from SA (lived in UK for 10 years inbetween) but are going to Invercargill (can't really get any more south than that!)
we've heard there are a few SA's down there but probably not in as great a number as Auckland.

Actually I've been thinking further on it and I know a couple of mums at school are from South Africa. Dunedin is a bit like that, pleny of expats sprinkled through the population, maybe the uni brings them here in the first place.
