Does anyone know if work references are applied for before you get your telephone interview?
We are wondering when we should tell our employers (usual question I know) but wanted to leave it as late as possible.
Many thanks

Hi,
This is a subject close to my heart, and it's caused me endless sleepless nights worrying! Both me and my daughter work at the same place...v. small firm, and two members of staff leaving at the same time will have a big impact. I'm planning on giving 3 months' notice though, so I don't intend leaving them in the lurch, but every day for the last 8months I've half-expected a letter or phone call from NZIS asking for my Boss :eek . I've not told anyone about my plans and I don't think carrying around this big secret helps with the already high stress levels! Anyway, so far-so good. My phone interview tomorrow and no-one seems to have contacted work so far ;)

Hi there - my husband's telephone interview was first and when they decided they wanted to go further with his application - they then applied for references. He gave them 5 referees and they only contacted one.
Good luck!

As part of confirming Andy's work experience for our ITA submission, we had to obtain letters from the people (companies) that Andy had stated he worked for. As such he approached his line manager and 2 previous managers in confidence. All very supportive, but you are talking a very large organisation here (not a small company where staff leaving would have a major impact). They then supplied the required 'reference' letters, virtually containing word for word what we'd said NZIS wanted to see. :nice1
Also within the original EOI we named these same 3 managers and their contact details as referies. I'm sure none of them has ever been contacted, as they would without question have mentioned it to Andy.
We had our interview last week, and as far as we're aware are simply waiting for the outcome (PR or WTR). Case Officer didn't mention anything further about getting additional references.
Does this help / make any sense ?

My references were contacted after the telephone interview. I hadn't provided them upfront because it all came about really quickly so I was asked after the interview, provided them by return email and then the references were contacted the next day again via email. I was asked for 2 professional and 1 personal references, and all were contacted. The rush was because the company pushed for a really early start date (and they knew I had a long notice period here), so if they're a bit more relaxed they might ask for telephone references or letters I guess.
Good luck!

Just in case anyone reading this thread is unclear:
I think that some posts in the thread are talking about NZIS interviews and some about job interviews. Am I right?
As far as I know, no reference checking is habitually done after the NZIS interview.
Sorry if I'm wrong on any of these points.
Cheers,
Matt.
