schools in porirua/kapiti coast area

Has anyone any experience of schools in the Porirua / Kapiti Coast area?

We have children of 10, 12 and nearly 14 so any thoughts on full primary or colleges would be appreciated.

We have contacted a Whitby primary school and a Porirua college but we are awaiting replies at present.

How has anyone else approached 'choosing schools'? Have been on the 'TKI' website but personal experiences would be useful to us.

We have yet to make the move to NZ but we anticipate it being September-ish!

I had a quick look in the area and thought that Kapiti college looked OK and Aotea was 'improving'. Of course if you have the money there's always Samuel Marsden.

I have heard that some kids travel up to Tawa or even Wellington for school.

The primary schools in Whitby were all quite good (we looked into them when we were hoping to settle last year. Have a look at the ERO reports for them This will give an indication for you.

There are a number of private schools in Wellington that are supposed to be excellent. Samual Marsden, and in Lower Hutt, Hutt international Boys was supposed to be really good by this is just second hand information, and worth checking for yourself.

TAWA Collage had a very good reputation and was "free" but I believe that it may have been zoned. The primary schools in Whitby were also being zoned. It was just coming in about September time last year.

Here's a link for current school zones.

It is not always the case that out of zone kids are not accepted...depends on the roll for that year.

Adventure and Discovery are zoned.
Tawa College is also zoned.

Tawa is most definitely zoned. They have strict policies for who they let in and who they don't. Much like the Welly schools. FamilyGuy, I will PM you as there are some things I don't want out in the open. :)

I can't PM you yet as you need 5 posts (none in the Lounge) before your inbox is activated. :)

Hmmm... apparently not. If you've posted in The Lounge, those posts don't count.

Good to have your thoughts and advice. Have checked out the link and ERO reports.

All this zoning is def something to bear in mind when we are looking at houses!
