Does anybody know or have experience with Building/Carpentry apprenticeships in New Zealand? My younger brother is thinking of coming over from the UK and starting a whole new career here, but it's hard to know how to find somewhere that will take on an apprentice / and whether it's worth completing a pre-trade course first?

Not sure about Wellington but here in Canterbury Sam did a carpentry course at the CPIT, tec college , which was very good so that might be a good place to start :nice1

There is a nationwide shortage of line mechanics (ie line men) working for the electricity distribution companies. Pay and allowances are usually good after qualification (normally 2 years on job and some block training) and gets better with further experience. Great job if you like being outdoors, working in small teams and using your hands (and brain!).

There are 17 electric lines companies. They either have their own contracting division orhave external contractors (Siemans, Transfield, NorthPower). Good source of info is http://www.esito.org.nz/
