I'm hopefully doing a reccy at the end of July (After the Lions have returned). I've got a couple (well millions, but I'll be selective) of questions:-
1. I'm taking a laptop, is it easy to get a ISP in New Zealand for a couple of months or are you better using a UK based one with overseas connections (ie AOL do a $6 per hour for connection from NZ). Can you get a NZ ISP with no permanent address?
2. I suspect you have to take your qualifications over with you so people can check they're real at interviews - If you're stopped at customs with certificates what do you do?
Any thoughts?
Cheers

Hi Jon,
Great to hear your goin over there :clap
Firstly good luck :nice1
About the ISP thingy, I would suggest you PM Rimbo, I sort of remember him mentioning doin this when he got there but didn't for some reason, then again I may be talking rubbish but PM him anyway I'm sure he could answer some othere question you may have about the feel of things etc for when you get there.
Hope to hear from you soon or see you at the next meet.
Take care

Jon I have walked through us customs with a bag of tools declaring i was holiday for three months. I cant see them emptying your bags and riffling through your documents to catch you out. You could just say holiday or just tell the truth. They would probably wish you luck.

Re ISP - We used Lynx dial-up ( http://www.lynx.co.nz/ ) for a temporary solution when we arrived - you dial into an 0800 number.
Might be an option for you.

RE Isp
Slingshot is $16 per month - dial up unlimited no connection charges. Yu do have topay for 3 months up front though but if you are here for 2 mths then the wasted month maybe inconsequential. Specially if you are short term renting a place with a phone line resticted to recieving calls and toll free (local) No.s
Jon
Connection speed seems always faster than in London Even over here in Waiheke - So backwards its nearly ahead

Thanks everyone.
Right I've now got 12 weeks to try and find something (don't you just love unpaid leave) - don't know if that will change any opinions/ideas.

Just like to congratulate you Jon, on making the BOLD move - its seems to have worked out for others so why not.
As far as your ISP goes Rimbo was able to hook into motels & hotels via their WIFI - (may be a little job trying to find all WIFI hotels though).
If your just going to one area - (do you drive?) the ISP JonSE has recommended may be the best alternative. Most internet cafes in Auckland are $3/hr.

Yes I do drive - I was thinking of mainly going to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, but I would spend a little time going between them seeing the rest of the country! I would probably expect to have a better chance in Wellington due to the nature of my work (Government Administration). I know it could be difficult getting into a Government post as most require a work visa before you can apply!

I dont know if anyone else has had a similar experience, but I tried to get a job at Christchurch City Council, and was told they couldnt employ me without PR (I had a work permit at the time).
Do you know anyone over here, we got over the problem of carrying qualifications etc by posting them to my friend who lived here already.

No I'm winging it!!!!
I don't know anyone to post them to, I don't know anyone in the country and I know about the government posts being, shall we say difficult!
Its going to be an experience!
My hope is that I get a post non-government to get PR and then I can apply for posts. You mentioning CCC wasn't good news as I've spotted a job on their website, but It's only an application I can fire them off and see what they say.
