Hi, This is my 7th year here in NZ, i have done 'foundation year' for a year, and then 4 years at otago uni. I have graduated in 2007 with a MAJOR in NEOROSCIENCE and a MINOR in philosophy. I worked as a part-time caregiver during my uni days, and have got a two years visa through the same company after i graduate as the immigration found that my education is relevant working with people with mental disability. HOWEVER, i have found out now, that CAREGIVING is not in any type of list, and i can't get any point for that, also it looks like I wont get any point for my 2 years working experience in new zealand, WHAT DO YOU THINK? do you recon i would get any points for my 2 years working experience? i am not finding any other jobs at the mo, its just so tough to get one especially something relevant to my study . I have got 90 EOI points now, excluding all jobs and work experience, so if work experience in NZ counts, i recon i would apply for PR, ALSO, do you guys think, its a good idea to involve an immigration lawyer for this matter. I've already spent around a hundred thousand dollars as an international student and got my degrees, and i do believe i deserve getting PR in NZ. PLEASE ADVICE ME WHAT SHOULD I DO. thanks.

I don't know an answer for you, but want to wish you luck.

The one idea that occurs to me (not having checked this out at all) is that perhaps you could look in the lists for your work under some other description. Is there perhaps anything under medical headings which may fit it? It seems strange that immigration would approve your working for two years if there isn't any connection with something on the lists.

Another thought. I expect your university has an office for dealing with overseas students. They will have wide experience of dealing with immigration for their alumni. Even though you have now finished your course, they would be able to advise you on the formalities of your situation.

Hi Adnan,

First, do not panic!

if you find that your course is not in the shortage list (im surprised, neuroscience should be) you can continue on the 2 year work permit..I mean its your releavent filed of study and then when you complete your 2 years, you can ask for the extension of your work permit...which should not be a problem id=f the employer is supportive and willing to give you an extension.
When you complete first 2 years you can apply for PR during that extended period of next 2 years.
But I must advice you to take help of an immigration consultant or lawyer as I believe they MIGHT suggest you a faster way to get PR.

from whatever knowledge I have about INZ, I think you should be fine...and did you complete a 3 year degree in neuroscience because as far as I know if you do a graduation in NZ that involves a 3 year bachelor'e degree you can apply for PR. Please talk to INZ about this.

Im sure you will be fine!

All the best!:nice1
