Hi all!
I have spent ages trawling the forum today looking for a post where someone gave a detailed breakdown of the cost of their reccie trip but I can't find it!
We are (still) deliberating whether to reccie trip or not, and just wondered what a reasonable amount of spending money would be for us, a family of 5.
We are looking into a hire car, and using the Top 10 sites for cheap accomodation.
Thanks in advance!

Well - last Sept/Oct, Hubbie and I did a trip of approximately 3,000 km in a campervan that did roughly (brochure estimates) 100km in 11 litres (I then took a pesimistic view and worked it out with a 12 litre to 100km estimate.)
At the time, diesel was $1.60 / litre, and the exchange rate I used was 0.406 $->£
We had a little bit of currency left over, but after buying some bits and pieces in the airport, it was only about $50.
The Campervan insurance I paid up front (and I paid full insurance - i.e. the maximum to make sure that there was no excess on any damage done either by me or a third party - it worked out to about an extra $100, but was well worth it, as I scraped the van down a concrete bollard!); the Deposit they ended up putting on my credit card, as it would only be taken properly if I didn't return the van.
I ended up converting £1700, and got $4340 through Travelex.
A breakdown of our spending money that I took out was:
Total $4,211 £1,664
Insurance $560 £228
Deposit $350 £138
Campsites $800 £315
Petrol $676 £266
Food $825 £325
Additional Fun Stuff $500 £197
Souvenirs $500 £197
In addition, our flights were £998 each, and the van hire was £796 for 17 days - total cost £2,792.
So the total of our holiday for 2 people for 17 days on the ground was near enough £4500.
Hope this helps!

That's great thanks so much for taking the time to type all of that!!
We are thinking these figures as a very rough estimate, and i am quickly getting car hire prices from a holday brochure so no doubt can do this cheaper independently.
£450 car hire/fuel
£550 accommodation
£4500 flights
£1000 spending/food/souvenirs
This is for 2 adults and 2 kids next April, (school hols)
