Any suggestions welcome as I'm in a bit of a panic.
I'm try to find a house in the Auckland area that I can rent, that will accept a dog (he's a very nice old dog), I've tried speaking to all the major rental agencies but they don't really seem that interested, I go out in 9 days time, and would really like to sort something out before I go.

All the best to you foolsgold99.
We'll be doing the same as you hopefully in August (if the house sells).
Hope you get sorted - taking the pooch is a problem isn't it but there's no way we would go without him!!! :no

Hi - don't panic is my first advice! I would seriously NOT try to sort a rental out before you arrive - it will shock you at the state of some of them.......so always go and look around it before making a decision.
When you get here, do the rounds of the agents in the area you want to be in - then also look at the Herald everyday and also the smaller local newspaper. In the paper, the landlords advertise direct, so you get a chance to ask them straight away about a dog.
It is a stressful thing, so be prepared to stay in the motel or wherever you have booked for a few extra days until you find what you want. As I say - don't panic as new rentals come available every day!

I'm sure that's good advice Neil, I'm just a bit stressed, just now.
I fly out a week on Monday, get there Wed morning and have to start work the following Monday.
I guess a motel for a few more days wouldn't hurt

Sure - it is a difficult few weeks! I paniced a bit and nearly signed up for a year in a place we would not have been happy in - I am so glad my OH chilled me out and made us wait an extra day before saying yes! Next morning this nice house was advertised directly in the Herald and he said yes with our 2 cats straight away!

Keep in mind that when you get here you can always offer an extra bond against dog damage to any owners who are reluctant to accept a dog. it might just be enough to tip the balance in your favour.

Bearing in mind that We are in Christchurch and not Auckland...
This is the second property we have rented, and we got both of these directly from the landlord adverstising in the paper. The rentals that the agencies have can be pretty bad, I agree with the messages above that you are much better off renting directly from the landlord. As veronica says, you can then deal with the landlord directly about issues such as dogs etc.

Hello foolsgold99
I could help you to scan the newspaper here for those advertisments by owners and give you the details through PM so that you could contact them directly for viewing upon your arrival.
Before I do that, please let me know which area do you want to live.
:cheers

Hi Hannah,
With a bit of help from Singel, we discovered that the best way to find a rental was through the ads in the NZ Herald, or the Trademe website, the agencies really did not want to know.
We had a great response from calling people direct, and from the enquiry system on Trade me, the response from the people on trademe was great, emails with photos, history's of the houses, long descriptions etc, we have pretty much decided to take one of them, after an inspection when hubby gets there on Weds. Its unfurnished in Ranui (west Auckland), but we have also just found a company called DTR that do furniture rental until your own stuff arrives.

:clap Thanks to those who posted advice on rentals, really helpful.
Have rented quite a few houses in UK, through agencies, and this would have been the way I'd have looked in NZ. Good to know in NZ it's better the other way round.
Thanks for the links too.
Regards
Lida
