I do a lot of cooking on our wood stove in winter - it has a special cook hood with temp gauge - it's great for stews, soups, baking, simmering etc - not great for roasting unfortunately as doesn't get hot enough. Good for baking too, and haven't boiled the leccy kettle for 4 weeks (well, been off for last few days waiting for sweep so had to resort to it for a few days lol)...
And, of course, we don't have mains gas on the South Island... :)

I'd love an Aga on coal/wood but just can't justify it for just a few months (winter) use. Would also have loved to have gas on mains supply for heating but impossible to get where we are so we just use a 9 kg bottle for the cooktop which lasts us around 6 months. My earthquake survival kit also relies on this still working and being accessible so I can still cook pasta:D
PS Moorf and other Cantabrians, have you seen the Aga at Jo Seagars' in Oxford? Drooooool

OMG yes! It's a beauty - and so it should be for $55,000 for her set up!! I think she got a bit worried about the way I was stroking it :D

Aga's don't come in coal/wood....only Rayburns.......we plan on getting one eventually but can't decide whether to get a Rayburn or an electric Aga that works on off-peak night time electric (surprisingly cheap to run).

Forgot to say that you can also get add on module that works as normal oven & hob when the heat store bit gets turned off over the summer.
