Recruiters demand hefty fee
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/employment/news/article.cfm?c_id=11&objectid=10578195

Do you think charging candidate for service fee, instead of charging the employer, will become a trend?
:uhoh

Hmm, not good that. I'm pretty sure that's illegal in the UK and for pretty good reasons.

Hi

We are paying a "finders fee" to the agency that are employed to find me work as part of a package deal for emigration services. They charge 15% of your starting salary but after 6 months they pay 10% back to you - kind of a bonus for staying with the company for 6 months.

Reason I signed up to this was that it gave me the advantage over the next guy because I cost the company nothing to employ - i.e. no agency charges.

Having said that, I'm still looking for work so can't say its giving me an advantage that an employer is too bothered about.

My view -- I don't think fees are the norm yet so don't assume you must pay some agency in order to be considered for a position. I received my first job offer, without a fee, through an NZ agency while still in the U.S. Am currently a candidate for another position and no fee has been mentioned. I think it does depend on the line of work you are in and the type of job in question.
